Default Shifter **** Removal Question

Im attempting to remove my shifter **** on my 02 A4. I need to replace the "chrome" ring that is cracking around the shift pattern. I tuned it clockwise and counter clockwise with no luck. I would pry around the ring but i dont want to mess up the leather or break plastic, unless this is the way to remove it. I my just need a new top cap, but i dont know. Any help would be great!

The shifer is clamped in place. Remove the plate around the shifter and unclip the boot and pull it up towards the shiter ball. You will see the clamp that holds it on. Cut the clamp off and the **** will pull straight off the top.
