I picked up an 6-speed s4 avant last week. It's been going good until the other day when it started smokin (rich black smoke) when I put the foot down hard. I noticed it on the highway when I nailed it at 80 and it refused to climb much aboev 90 without a big fight. I contacted the dealer where I bought it from and he said the black smoke was an 'inherent trait' of the type of chip fitted in the car??? Not sure what his thoughts were on the power surging though. I think he's pulling my leg and trying to get out of some warranty claim. What I need to know though is what it could be so that I can have some ammo for him when I take the car in on Thursday. Let's just say my confidence in this dealer is pretty low.

The cause of black smoke can range from as simple as a plugged air filter to as costly as failed turbos. Only chips i know of that are supposed to blow black smoke are on diesels. Thats not to say a very poor chip couldnt do the same thing, but any of the good ones wont smoke.
