Soft Top Storage Box Error

Soft Top Storage Box Error
Hey Guys,
I have a 2012 A5. Tried to lower the top the other day and got the message "Soft Top Storage Box not lowered remove obstruction". Read through the forum and found that the sensors on either side of the fabric section fail. I have replaced both of them. Still get the same error. Took the car to the stealer and they tell me the storage box is "broken" and the replacement is $1600. This is a simple fabric liner.
I am trying to figure out if their is a sensor on the pivot shaft on the rear of the storage box. I have tried to adjust the take up roller just behind the rear seat. I have tried the take up loose and tight. The sensors seem to line up with the metal tabs either way. Is there a trick to lining up the assembly? Is there a way to test the sensors? What is the circuit that includes the sensor?
I am pretty handy with a wrench but for the live of me I cannot figure out what I missed. The top moves smoothly to access the top storage area but the car thinks the sensor circuit is not closed. Do I have to manually execute the entire open/close cycle?
I am stumped. TIA.
