Default Temperamental temp gauge

Hi all,

Newbie here so please go gently

I've recently purchased an A4 1.8T, my first Audi, and i love it. I've noticed though that the temperature gauge is temperamental in the fact that sometimes it works and other times not at all.

Any suggestions on a solution to this, any help much appreciated

likely the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor, fairly cheap to replace. Try using the search feature for more info

I own 2 B5 A4 1.8T's and both have the same problem. I even got a trouble code for it. The check engine light did not come on though. If you have access to an OBD II scanner, it will probably come up with a code having to do with a coolant temp. sensor. Good Luck!

Yep, it's about a $20 part. There's a DIY procedure for it either in the DIY section of this forum, or on www.audiworld.com or www.audidiy.com. Easy and cheap enough to do, plus it's a common failure part on the A4. Even if you change it and it doesn't fix the issue (which it probably will), you didn't waste the money - yours is bound to die sooner or later, so a replacement is at the very least a preventative maintenance deal.
