Default Thermostat Problem

Morning All,

I have a 2000 A6 and recently had an overheat. When I immediately stopped and popped the hood I had smoke and the smell of coolant burning off. My collant reservoir was boiling. I refilled the reservoir and drove it through a drive through and the overheat alarm came on again after about 10 minutes. I also has the heat on high when driving and was getting nothing but cold air. My ca as 60k on it and it seems that the problem is the thermostat. I talked to the mechanic that the dealership recommends and he said he also thought it was the thermo and that I should probably replace it and the timing chain in the process. My timing chain has not been replaced and it makes sense to do. I have been quoted 750. for the two and I am wondering if that sounds right. Look forward to your thoughts.

that is a little on the high priced. I would say 500-600 is more of a average price for a independant mechanic.

audi901990, please don't type in all caps.

If you meant the timing belt, get the water pump done at the same time.

yeah i'd check the water pump, i had that same problem with my last car. i thought it was the thermostat b/c the heat wasn't working, then shortly after my engine temp starting skyrocketing. i took it to a mechanic and it turned out i had a coolant leak and the water pump needed to be replaced along with a bunch of other things costing around $700. i didn't fix it, but bought an audi instead hehe!
