For what it worth: I am having the same issue with my audi (same model and year) and by looking at the part itself I was thinking you MIGHT be able to do this job without removing the steering wheel. I was looking at the plastic collar around the steering column and it appears that with a little persuading you can probably take it off by removing the screws on the under side of the aforementioned collar. That should expose the internals of the cloumn thus making it possible to remove the old combo switch and install the new one. However, this is all contingent on the idea that the combo switch is a multi-piece assembly type of deal. Otherwise the steering wheel will most assuredly have to be removed, at which point I am in the same position as you and will be awaiting a reply from a more qualified individual.

Nope - the wheel has to come off. There are screws whose heads are facing the back of the wheel. It's not difficult to do - make sure the battery is disconnected first, and it doesn't hurt to get a grounding strap from an electronics store to wear while doing the job. Check www.audidiy.com or www.audiworld.com for a DIY procedure - one of them has it I'm pretty sure.

Just be careful when handling the airbag. Get a grounding wrist strap at an electronics store to be sure your body's static is discharged. If you can't find one, at least touch the body of the car for 5 seconds before handling the connector. You don't want to take chances with that thing going off.
