Hey guys,

I am in need of urgent help desperately. I bought a damaged December 2004 make Audi A6 2.4L V6 (Current shape classified as 2005 model) and have repaired the whole car fine with no drama at all.

Problem is now the motor will not start, it has been taken to numerous mechanics and audi service centres and no one knows what is wrong. Basically I need a manual or information as to how the engine works and operates in this car, however Audi do not release this information and when I have found some sort of download it always involves paying. I am stuck really bad and don't know what to do anymore, basically the car wants to start it has kick in it just does not generate enough spark to start up. Any suggestions would be FANTASTIC and diagrams or information on the engine even better.

Is the CEL on? If so, have the codes read.

 

If you took it to an audi service center, they should have at least given you the codes, there have to be some. So let us know what they were. Is the fuel pump running, do you have spark? Some more data might help.

 

I got nothing, they did not tell me a thing besides, "we need to look further into the situation, and this requires a minimum of $1900 labour however could go up in price pending on how long it takes. Oh yeh and your parts are on top of that price obviously." I asked him for a diagram on the motor he wouldnt even give me that, they are ********.

My cousin is a mechanic so the car is at his place now. We opened it up slightly and noticed that only one cam is turning in the motor. We checked the chain and it is snapped, but there is some part (some form of sensor) he said that is missing at the back and not locking in the other cam to turn? We cannot find where it is. Do you guys know what I am talking about, its at the back of the motor near the chain, sorry about the crap explaination.

Well, that is not quite so. At the back of the engine there is a valve, that regulates oil flow into the adjuster (see picture), allowing for adujstment of the camshaft (in your engine the intake), not for "turning on" its drive. If it doesn't drive the camshaft, than it or the camshaft must be damaged (as well as practically all the valves in both heads I expect, based on your description of what happened). Check and see, if it works on the side with the snapped chain.

Sorry I meant to say that the chain is NOT snapped, the right side of the motor is fine, its only the left playing up...

 

any codes? in what way is it playing up? was the timing belt set up right?

 

No i was not given any codes sorry, everything is set up correctly something wrong internally, basically one cam is turning and the other is not, causing the motor to choke but not start...

 

simple really if only one cam is turning then the other is detached so if the cam chain isn't broke then the cam isor the cam sprocket is spinning and that would mean its not connected to the cam shaft, remove the sprocket which the timing belt goes over and check if the pin on the rear is snapped ( very common when not tight )
