Default Vag Com

hey guys, newbie here, came over from passatworld.com. condidering that i will be buying a '99 A6 shortly i thought i should get some advice from you audi guys.
the car needs a cluster and i was gonna do it myself. ( im a bmw mechanic) i see that they are coded to the vehicle just like Bimmers, so i will at least need a vag com tool i think to do it. this tool would be nice to have anyway to deal with check eng. lights and do a little side work here and there. anyway, whats the most inexpensive way to get set up with a vag com? i went on the website for Ross-tech, and they offer so many kits with different cables and so on, and its unclear which ones even include the software. they have kits that range from 250.00 to 800.00, and i dont really see what the diff. is besides diffferent cables included

any experience with this stuff?????

he pulled all the data from my car. there were a couple of past codes but nothing major in the past.
he cleared the cel and it has not come back on. here in ny the emissions test for 1996 and newer is a direct plug in to the computer.
a cel is automatic fail.

he was able to pull all he needed with the renn art cable and software.

i did a search for renn-art and there seems to be a few different sites with that name. one being a tuner company that doesn't offer any vag com tools

the guy who cleared my CEL said renn art on the AF site.

if you do a search on vag-com locator you may be able to find someone near you that has one.

that is how i found the person to clear my cel. all it cost me was a 6 pack.

I bid $29.99 for this code reader on ebay. I paid $39.97 with insurance and shipping. It reads the VAG codes in hexidecimal, and includes a manual with the error definitions.
