My '98 2.0 quattro a4 died on me yesterday. I noticed that when I turned the car on the key didn't feel the same as when I normally start it, but it did start. I tried to use my turn signals and they wouldn't work, nor would my windshield wipers, or the a/c. My radio turned on however, as well as all the electrical in my dashboard. I turned the car off and it would not start again. I was able to pop start it and it ran fine. But when I turned it off it would not start up again. The check engine light as well as the ABS and Brake lights came on. I was suggested to get a new battery. After putting in my new battery, the car will still not turn over. I can hear this very soft click sound when I try to start it. Multiple people keep telling me it's either the starter or the alternator, but I'm not sure who to listen to. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid of going into a mechanic shop and not having a clue as to what is wrong with it and getting ripped off.

 

Starter relay or ignition switch might be bad.

 

sounds like an electrical problem of some sort. you NEED to go GET YOUR CODES SCANNED first. this will tell you why those lights are on.
