Default 1.8t overheating problem! help!

Guys i just got this 02 jetta 1.8t with 68,000 miles and after getting on the car for the first time since i got it, the car starts to overheat.. so i pull over and after it cools down i get it home and pop the hood and both the radiator hoses are hot. Let it cool down and start it up, now it doesn't overheat at idle but it does when i drive around the block.. pop the hood and the lower radiator hose is cold but the top is hot. Now usually this in my mind means t-stat but from what i've heard its prolly the water pump. Fan turns on. Does this sound like a water pump issue?? I JUST bought this car today and this is what happens, just my luck.. hopefully it didnt' do any internal damage.

sorry the volkswagen forums i can't post on for some reason.. i think its down.. but a 1.8t is a 1.8t! please help! i hope its just an air pocket but i don't think it is
