Default 1997 a4 2.6 avant hunting & over revving problem

Hi all

I am in South Africa and own a 1997 Audi A4 2.6 Avant. Unfortunately, I am not able to use my car every day so she stands for a week or so, before I run her. I had to replace the battery and that is when everything went haywire. When I started her, she started 'hunting'. I switched off, turned the ignition on and left it for about a minute or two, in order for the 'codes' to reset. I then started her again. The hunting was gone, but she revs at 1900rpm and even leaving her to idle for about 5 mins, switching off and on again, will not drop her revs. I have been advised to get in and ride her around the block, which should solve the problem. I have not done this as when she was idling, I noticed smoke pouring out from underneath the engine. I immediately checked the oil - which was fine and cold; then I checked the header tank water - same, all fine. Everytime I start her and she starts warming up, the smoke comes. Being a female, I am very wary of driving her away from home, especially if she is going to smoke. Any advice please?
