I have an Audi A4 that needs a top up of the Engine oil after every 500 miles or so .. I've been told that it needs new pistons .. is this the correct diagnosis for a 4 year old car that's done 67,000 miles to date?

What engine? The 2.0ts are notorious for oil consumption due to (iirc) improperly seated piston rings.
Call your local dealer, they often perform consumption tests (dealer tops off the oil, resents the trip odometer, and you come back when the oil light comes back on).
If it consumes more than some predetermined amount in a certain time, there is (or was) a service campaign where Audi will pay for the necessary repair.

^that's it right there. It starts with replace the PCV valve, then the piston rings if that doesn't work. If it's out of tolerance on the newer cars (2009+ I think), they'll fix it free of charge, even after the warranty has expired.
I also have a 2007 A4 2.0T and mine burns through oil every few weeks! There's no evidence of smoke or leaks anywhere so my mechanic is claiming it's the turbo that needs to be replaced. Does anyone have any experience with this or know that to be true? Thanks in advance.
