Immeadiate attention needed. New user
Hey guys,
I'm a subaru guy by heart and I've rebuilt a dozen subies from the ground up and I know know the little ins and outs so to speak but with this car I know absolutely nothing. Heres my issue:
Car: 1997 Audi a6 quattro awd with a 2.8 (12v I think)? 110k miles
It has bad head gaskets and the transmission shift selinoid might be causing some issues, other than that its a solid car. The guy I'm buying it from said he can't put anymore money into it, (new Tbelt and waterpump.) How involved is it to change the HG, and parts wise? I'm sure I will have no issue tackling it but I want to get an idea of what I'm looking at. Like I said I know absolutely nothing about audi's... yet. Any help soon would be legit seeing as that Im about to get this thing on a trailor. Thanks a ton! Also I couldn't locate an all data or haynes or chiltons on this motor (only the dohc 30v)

Audis are a real PITA to work on. That said you probably wont really run into anything you cant handle and this forum is pretty good about having a decent number of people who can help you out if you get in a jam.
My understanding is that the shift solenoid is not all the difficult. The head gasket is probably going to suck though, but as long as you have the car apart to do the timing belt, waterpump, t-stat (yes, apart) it shouldn't be too much extra work.
Bentley publishing for the shop manual.
good luck keep us up to date on how it goes

Thanks beau! I'm trying to figure out what everyone means by a pain to work on, I don't see how it could be that much more of a pain than a subaru. you basically gotta pull the motor on a subie to do just about anything, and if a bottom end goes,... eff it your toast lol...unless you wanna upgrade. Timing belt, t-stat and waterpump has been done within the last three months. My question is... how often has anyone heard of a 2.8 block cracking? The guy said that he did that HG's recently but yet they have gone out. Now I'm questioning him as a mechanic as well as the integrity of the VW engineering. I have never really heard of an N/a motor having that kind of an issue, especially at 110k.
