With son #1 away at university with one of our cars, and with son #2 on track to get his license soon, we were effectively a 3-driver, 1-car (2001 VW Passat 1.8T wagon, tip) family. Yesterday, we added a second car, a well-maintained 1996 Audi 2.8Q with 65k mi / 110k km on the clock.

Although I always dutifully give the 1.8T Mobil 1 0W-40 oil, the first owner kept the Audi on dino at the local dealership. I am going to keep it on dino (10W-30 winter, 15W-40 summer for southern California ???) while I run a full course of Auto-RX, after which I am wide open to oil suggestions, although I am leaning toward dino on a 6-month OCI, because it will be racking up less than 5k mi / 8k km per year, mostly in the city and suburbs (stop-and-go, short trips, etc.).

Thanks, Redgoat. My (teen and young adult) boys love the handling, my (artist) wife likes the look, and I like the similarity to our Passat. I am a regular on Passatworld.com (quite an education!), vwvortex, bikeforums, and oldroads.com/vintage lightweights (classic road racing and touring bicycles, one of my major passions).

Congrats on the new purchase, and welcome to the forums. I lurk around VW vortex, but mostly in the Mk I and Mk II Jetta/Golf sections.

Hey welcome to the forums. Congrats on your buy.
Thanks, Jestnomen. It has a few known issues, but it runs great and looks alot younger than its 9 years. Second order of business, after engine oil and Auto-RX, will be a transmission (non-tip 5-speed ZF automatic) pan drop and fluid and filter change.
