i bought a remote keyless entry with flip key online and
followed instructions but it will only unlock the doors not start the engine.
is this something the dealer will need to do

 

2001 and up cars have the immobilizer system and the key needs to be programmed in order to start the car. If you have only that key that you just bought, then you will have to tow the car to a shop that can program that key for you.

 

a knowlegable person with vag-com may be able to do it, you may need the key code which used!! to be in owners manual, my 01 jetta had it in but i believe this practice was discontinued to put you at the mercy $$$$ of the stealer!!
