Default New girl, chicago, needs some help!

Hey everyone. My mom got an 03 audi about 2 years ago and I have really liked the car.

I just graduated college so I am starting to look for one for myself.

I am going to check out a 96 a4 tonight with the v6 in it. Was hoping someone could help me out with some things I should look for in this particular year/model??

I also will be doing a compression check on the car and want to know if anyone has the numbers that are acceptable?

thanks for any help!

SS

I found this thread that might be of use to you; this gentleman claims to be able to lookup any audi service that was done on the car - providing it was serviced at the dealer (usually for the first several years at least).

Why are you doing a compression test? It's a good measure of course, but do you have a feeling that there are some bad cylinders?

Good luck.

a lot. just shy of 200k. I think it needs some front end suspension parts. tie rod ends etc but the interior is very nice and the exterior is pretty good as well.

I don't have any previous knowledge of the car. Want to find out if there are any bad cylinders. I've been taught it's good practice to do a compression check on any used motor before purchasing.

I didn't get the answer I was looking for and I didn't write down what the numbers were but they were all within 10% of each other. I figured they were either all good or all bad.

Considering its a 10:1 compression motor it was within a decent range. Something like 120psi or so +/- less than 10%

How much is it? I would say don't buy it unless you wanna sink alot (I mean alot into that thing) I could give you a list of things to look into. Look around for a 97-99 a4 1.8t or 2.8 with less miles. There are decent ones around in the $5000 range

It's already done. It was cheap.

On to the next inquiry. What parts are there in the front suspension to be replaced to take care of a wobble ~45mph?

Tie rod ends, ball joints. anything else?

requires more info; does the wobble start at 45 and then taper off at higher speeds or just get progressively worse? does it do it on smooth roads or only after hitting a small or larger size bump? Is it hard to steer? does it wonder/lean to left/right? Are the tires good and wearing evenly? Where do you feel the wobble - steering wheel, or the car, or both? more info the better. One car ride is worth a thousand words!

It will start around 40 and get progressivly worse until you hit 45 then start to taper back until you hit 50. After you climb past 50 its gone. Rides smooth 50-90, which is as high as i've taken it.

Happens every time through that range and it is through the wheel and the rest of the car as well. Fells like is mostly from the front passanger side.

It wants to wander just a little when you first hit the brakes, but it does not pull hard or continue to go after the initial shift.

I am going to go run it up on ramps right now and check out the tire/wheel and all the steering components and suspension linkages and see what is what.
