Intercooler sizes?
I see alot of TTs with FMIC but all around the same size, which isn't all too big.
I'm coming from a DSM environment (eclipse/talons) where they usually stuff huge intercoolers in their cars.
Is the performancegain differencegoing to be that big between a huge intercooler or a "normal" sized intercooler like the forge kit?
I would think the answer would be obvious, but then factoring in boost loss from a bigger core and such, or am I wrong?

a ic only needs to be so big, anything bigger is killing performance by increasing lag and pressure drop. Kits made for TT's are designed for the stock turbo and some are good for even more.
IC needes to be as big as needed. But, you can lower the size required to cool X amount of degrees by improving other factors. Like the restriction in the air system, Turbo efficiency, etc... Since the OEM turbos are quite efficient, a smaller IC is needed. If you desighn the system right, you can have a small IC.
As any heat exchanger, making the frontal area bigger will provide better cooling that by making the IC thicker.
If you want to do a custum one, maximize the frontal area, and then make thickness of the cooler only to alow the max CFM. Then you will actually get it very effcient IC and same or better response as OEM. Just have to get a book and use the formulas.

OMG, they actually gave you a tech certified badge [:'(]
The effiency of the turbo doesnt play any factor in ic sizing. Also the design of the endtakes makea huge difference in how the ic performs. Finally, its a heat exchanger, having it thin vs fat makes no difference as long as it gets airflow over the IC.
Please stop trying to talk over peoples heads to make yourself sound smart, especially when your talking out of your *** and are wrong.....again.
And no, im not making this another one of your stupid debates that you take no where. I will not post again to refute your BS

OMG, you actually care. Couldn't belive it.
Oh well, its all in thermodynamics. If you have more efficient turbo, you have less heat, so you need a smaller IC.
its all simple.
as all radiators, they like to have frontal area larger.
If you make it larger, you increase the cooling area and you get more air through.
I am not joking, check out the formulas to calculate the IC size, and see the diference in heat generated by turbo on two diferent effciencies. You dont have to belive me, just check it your self.

The flow of the ic and what kind of internal design the core has plays a huge part in what kind of core you need. You can have a ebay style single fin bar and plate ic, but you would need a huge core to cool it since you arent extracting heat as well. But if you have a nicer garrett core with triple the amount of fins on the inside, you can have a much smaller core.
Oh and good luck running a 35r at 18psi through a smaller core since it is more effient than a ko3 at 18psi. Im sure the ko3 will be far cooler since there is less air being moved.

Its true about internal desighn of a core. However, what you can buy on todays market doesnt wery from one another that much.
The formulas that you can find online, or books, or other sources, they work fine. And from that formulas, you can see that increasing frontal area is more beneficial that to increase thickness.
If look hard enough, you can find the constants of that core, to calculate the most beneficial size.
And no doubt, Audi did the math, and small core is all they need.

Exactly, if you look hard enough you will be abel to find its cooling properties. Since nothing is made same. However, they all are similar, and wont differ that much one from another.
The desighns are all similar, I am yet to find something diferent from clasic radiator.
Anyways, what ever works is fine with me.
