Q: What does it matter if Iran has a huge military if they can't mass their forces without fear of being destroyed from the air? Any mech forces that survived an air attack would not survive contact with US tanks/helicopters.
ps - I'm not for doing it, but I'm just pointing out the obvious. We don't have to occupy Iran. We just have to make life so incredibly $hitty that they fold. If you start to destroy the Iranian infrastructure with bombing that they cannot hope to stop, then they will eventually get the message. Ground troops can be reserved for if the Iranians try a move into Iraq or elsewhere. It's a "bottle them up and make them pay" strategery. Bad economic consequences all around though, but that is nothing compared to waiting around and letting them get nukes.
