I live in Oregon and my dad is one of three regional accident reconstructionists for our state police. In Oregon, he can either be on or OFF duty, see a traffic violation occur, and he has 6 months from the date of the violation to issue a citation. is that the same in your state.

in other words, what statute of limitations for traffic violations?

Also in oregon, state police at least, all the officer has to do is identifty themself as a police officer, so, he could pull someone over in his personal vehicle, show his badge and i.d. himself, and issue a citation, is this the same for you notahondaowner, i didnt read many replies from this thread so idk if you've already answered?

In this state the statute of limitations is 1 year. Unmarked cars CAN pull you over. Only once have I ever pulled someone over in my Audi and that was because he ran myself and 2 other vehicles off the roadway. He stopped for a red light I got out of my car, in full uniform since I was coming home from work, and ordered him to pull off the roadway when the green light changed. So only when someone is endangering the lives of others would we do something like that. Do some officer's do it for petty stuff? I'm sure somewhere they do, every officer is different.

yea, ive been with him on two occasions where he has done so. He didnt actually turn on his hazards and chase the guy down, haha, we called into dispatch and had a marked car pull the person over, then my dad issued the citation (both of which the persons were driving under the influence) and were then arrested.

I have a longer question that I'll have to post later, but two quick things now.

First, great thread. A lot of officers where I grew up in PA wouldn't offer advice and answers like this.

Second, and I understand if you don't answer this, because I probably wouldn't. But where in MD do you work? Just curious because I moved to the Wash metro area about a month ago and you seem to be very familiar with the practices of DC and VA. I've been checking out your thread just to see how things are different here than in PA.

Let's just say I work in an area where we work with DC a lot. I also interned for my father's department which was federal so I worked with MD DC and VA agencies for an entire summer.

So, a few quick things I guess.

I had a traffic violation involving a bus a last... April I think. I was coming around a turn (going the speed limit) as a school bus was slowing down. I couldn't see the bus from where I was, but as the front of my A4 ('98) was about 5 feet in front of the bus, it flipped it's stop signs out. I was getting tailgated at the time, and didn't want to slam my brakes and get rear ended. So, I coasted through. The bus driver seemed fine, but two people in cars behind the bus actually wrote down my plates and reported me to the sheriff's office. I got a call from the sheriff about it all and a court date got scheduled. The ticket got dismissed, until the 6th of October, so 4 days. Along with that, I had to take a defensive driving course, which I just finished. The idea was, no tickets before my probation was up (the 6th).

Last weekend, I'm driving to Vermont on the Thruway. I'm in the middle lane and this guy is riding my ***, and i'm getting really frustrated. I see an opening on the left, move over and hit the gas. I topped out at 83 (in a 65) as a cop pulls out from behind a stone wall throws on his lights, and I pull over just down the road. The guy takes my license and registration and comes back 2 minutes later with a ticket.

OK! here's the question. Since the ticket isn't due until the 9th, will the tickets cross in the mail and be unrelated? I'm going to court, as soon as I get my date. I'm just praying that the tickets wont get combined and the charge for the original violation come back. Would this result in me losing my license? Just need some 'professional' insight

Thanks.

well if you were on the "Thruway" then you were in NY and if you where heading to VT and on a 3 laner I''m guessing Albany area?, (people not from here call it the 90 or the interstate). Anyways, the two tickets are unrelated in general. Unless the judge gave a an ACD on the passing a school bus ticket (conditional discharge, which means DONT **** UP) you have not technically been convicted of anything, yet. The court judge for the school bus thingy will MOST likely not know about the speeding ticket, HOWEVER if he/she asks you may want to say you recently did get a ticket. I unfortunately know more about the vehicle and traffic law in NY than I'd prefer to ..... Honesty is the best policy. Hope all works out for ya man, but as for the two being related if your case was just "adjourned" until the 6th you will probably be fine. Espicially with the class and all ....

Awesome, thanks for the information man. I'm really scared about losing my license to be honest, haha. Just a little freaked out. hopefully nothing goes wrong with the courts and the two tickets don't collide.

Assuming you got both of these in the same state.

This all depends on when the officer turned in the ticket and how fast the processing of the courts is. Some courts are very fast, some very slow. If you got the second ticket before your probation is up most likely the judge will see this when you appear for your speeding. The judge can then choose to reinstate the first charge and add it to your speeding charge. This also depends on if the officer brings in your driving record or if the judge has a computer in front of him/her.

if some one cuts me off and creates a dangerous situation and i in a moment of anger give them the finger or a hand gesture and at the next light get out and come to my window yelling and i in slef denfense beat them up is it still self defense, only reason i ask is because it happened to me today, although i let him finish his spiel and return to his car wihtout confrontation (i really didnt want to end up fighting regardless if i won or didnt) and let it go, i was still ready to fight, i dotn carry any weapons or crap in my car but hope that speed and agility along iwht several year of kickboxing are on my side.
