why do cops speed and get away with itand citizens get tickets

Not all cops speed, not all citizens speed. Not all cops get away with it either. Some have ticketed each other, VERY strong in VA, othersare issuedtickets from speed cameras.
so if i see a cop speeding can i flag him down and issue a citizen speeding violation
Absolutely not for many legal reasons. You CAN write down the tag number of that cruiser and file a complaint. If you think that these complaints don't add up you are sorely mistaken. So many people forget that this option exists. You are not powerless to report these infractions.

For everyone else just ignore the negative posters, their posts will be cleaned up as moderators get around to it and the thread will continue on course.
i sure hope you are not refuring to me as a negative poster, also what legal resons prevent me from issuing such a citation, what cause there a cop makes them exempt from being policed by the people that pay there wages i for one think the law enforcment needs to be putbackin the hands of the people and not some buracratic paid cop on a power trip, bet if it happend alot less crimes would be commited and alot less in the jails and prisons

I wouldn't be surprised if this has already been asked and I apologize if it has.

If an officer asks me to step out of my vehicle can I refuse to do so? Are there certain situations where I can say no and certain situations where I would absolutely have to?

Im not being negative at all. I appreciate your bravery for even allowing a bunch of random people from the internet to know you're a police officer. But you just ignoring me just shows how obtuse most police officers are.

WeezyTT - I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to you when he referenced negative personalities and just because he hasn't replied to you yet doesn't mean he's ignoring you.

I am not referring to you, no worries. This is the first time this point has been raised and I am sure many people wonder this, though I highly doubt many have considered trying to flag down an officer to try and issue them a citation. I will take my time to break this down and answer this as best I can so bear with me.

1. You can not issue this citation because: you are not trained in determining speed, you have no instrumentation for determining speed, even if you were to set a pace our speedometers are calibrated monthly in order to be used in court, you are not an authority and as such can not cite someone for breaking laws which you have not received thorough training and instruction on, you are not in an emergency vehicle with adequate safety equipment which warns other traffic that a traffic stop is occurring, and many many more reasons. As I stated above you can report them which can get them in just as much trouble and in some cases even more trouble than normal citizens. Officers have lost their driving priviledges and even jobs over such issues.

2. Police pay the same taxes you do so. You do not pay "our salary" you pay taxes for your local area to provide you with services you may very well depend on one day to survive. So by that justification I am paying my own salary? Do you tell firefighters, road crews, teachers, and other goverment workers how to do their jobs because you pay their salaries? You pay taxes to your goverment which provides you services to increase your quality of life.

3. You may want to look up the definition of bureaucrat if you think a police officer on the street is one, you have much to learn. Law enforcement is in the hands of the people because it hires from the population. This isn't some exclusive club. If you want to make a change get a degree and join. Also keep in mind we enforce the laws that are enacted by the people our population VOTES for. Whether or not it is the person you voted for passing these laws makes no difference. We call this democracy.

4. If you are saying all officer's are on a power trip I would ask you not to be so quick to stereotype. These comments do not help your argument if you wish to call it that.

5. If you put our jobs in the hands of the general untrained population you would strongly regret it. Law enforcement is not so much a job, but a calling. This is a job for people who want to do this and don't mind getting paid less to work harder than most who earn more.

This is the end of these questions if you have a serious question in the future please feel free to ask.

The negative comment did not refer to you and I had already addressed your marijuana post. Please pay attention before you begin the name calling. I appreciate your stance on the drug, but this is not the place to discuss it.

I see baconbait beat me to the policing of this thread once again.

If the order to step out of the vehicle is legal you must exit the vehicle. If an officer has reason to conduct a legal investigation of your person or car for whatever reason you must submit to certain tests and searches. Your best option is to always obey the orders of the officer. Leave it to the courts to decide if their actions were legal later on. Believe me when I say if you are told to get out of a vehicle you are coming out one of two ways, voluntarily or involuntarily. I hear tell voluntarily is much more comfy.

Whats the deal with european front tags. Obviously in some states you don't need a front tag so they are fine, but for MD you need one. I have a eurotag in the front but it says MD-(my license number). What do you think the odd's of getting pulled over for that are? If I do get pulled over and explain the fact that the tag does have my number on it do you think most likely I'll get a fine for no front tag or just a warning or repair order?

I will double check tomorrow but as best I know repair orders do not apply to tags. This would depend on the officer, but I can tell you right now that if you did get a ticket for Failure to affix tags to front and rear of vehicle, this would hold up in court. Although you do have the registered numbers and even the state name, most other drivers simply aren't into vehicles as deeply as we are. They will see a european style tag and they will be completely confused as to what "state" it belongs to. Registration plates have to be state issued and official. Would I personally give you this ticket, I don't think I would as long as you had the correct numbers on there. Would/could other officers, yes. This state law requires two front tags to make vehicles more readily identifiable to both citizens and officers in case they are part or a crime or investigation. Should you or any other on this forum get this ticket I highly recommend putting on the required tag and bringing proof that it has been corrected to court with you, 99 percent of the time the ticket is then dropped.

totally off topic, but I was watching the movie S.W.A.T tonight, and Samuel L said to collin farell "the cage is a job, but SWAT is a calling" or somthing like that.........
