Default my engine sounds like an old ford

i have nearly finished off restoring my 1991 coupe,i have recently changed the fuel management system and fuel injectors to get the thing to finally run,the timing is slightly out i think and idles to high,i have tried to lower this but the engine cuts out,my main problem tho is the crank rattle when i accelerate, when i add some gas the engine rattles like an old ford cortina and does not seem to have a good pick up for a 2.0e im at my wits end as im not sure if this could be due to the timing chain being slack if it is can anybody tell me how to tighten/adjust it as this is a job i have not yet done,i dont want to have to change the crank bearings unnecessarily if the problem is the timing chain,i want to drive my audi.any help would be very much appreciated.

Having your timing belt loose, or the timing out too far on an interference motor could be disastrous...
