The Altima would probably be the better bet, primarily for its better trade-in value.
If your friend is not too concerned about that though, I would say just say pick the one you like more.

All else being equal I'd go for the issan, too. If only because its engine is a more conventional straight 4, as opposed to a water-cooled boxer.

They're both slow, semi-luxury, middle class econo-boxes with little to separate them besides the badge on the grill. Buy which ever one is at the closest dealer.
If you were talking about the 3.5 Altie against the Turbo Leg, then it might be different.

I am a big Nissan and Suby fan and like both cars, but I would go with the Legacy just for the AWD advantage. I'm sure both will last for many many miles and will be pretty damn reliable. Altima will hold its value a little better. Gas? Dealership? Personal preference really. I vote Suby.
