I have found the H1's we wheel with to be cumbersome and fragile on the trails of CO and UT. Tons of trail repairs. They are PERFECT for fighting a war in the desert, though.

I think with the key, spacers, and 37" tires (same as an H1), my clearance is about the same. Don't know about the center of gravity. My drivetrain sits much lower than on an H1 despite the excess height and added top-heavy weight. I sure am curious now.
Thats what I meant, for recreational (read: Consumer) fourwheeling, they suck. Slow, no power, no articulation, dont fit anywhere.....etc. But like you said, for fighting a war in a desert (i.e. what they were actually designed for) they pretty much cant be beat.

Your H2 loses clearance due to the solid rear, but bodywise your clearance may be around the same. i still think you would lose on COG tho, longer/wider/lower helps alot in that area.

I used to wheel a SAS 1 ton 2wd chevy

But I sold her to a buddy for parts to help raise $$ to move to NYC. When we move back out of the city in 4 years i'm probably gonna build a jeep.( i dont really want to, but you cant deny the performance per dollar ratio for jeeps. Those stupid little things really do work pretty well off-road.)

Looks like fun. I don't mind seeing a chromed out Hummer ("BAALLLIN!" ) but like others have said, way to put it to the test.

haha it started off as 2wd, i built brackets for 56" rear springs from an older chevy (offset pins make longer wheelbase/less approach angle) built my own crossmembers and swapped in a 4wd tranny/tcase and a dana 60. worked out really nice. not including the axle and tires i have less that 500 bucks in the whole project.

That is a cool project. The H2 is slowly making a transformation to run the 2012 Baja 1000. It has run the 250 and was ROUGH. Needs a lot of work between now and then. I am looking for a few more mods to the exoskeleton and a lexan windshield before I try the 500.
