M3 is a very well tuned 3 series by an in-house tuner basically, S4s on the other hand are not tuned as much from the factory. so there is more space for additional tuning in the S4 as opposed to the M3, and the B5 gen bi-turbo S4s had the avantage of massive power uprgrades due to turbos <img src=uploads/Firestarter1984/5B2E6_beer.gif border="0">

BMW M3 are faster. However S4's are fast and can be just as fast but they are also way more practical. All Wheel Drive! Lets race an S4 and M3 in the snow or loose gravel. Then the S4 would smoke them. It also depends what year M3 and S4. I was refering to new ones. I believe that Older S4's like 1992 are faster then like 1995 M3's. I could be wrong.</P>

it has been proven that a bone stock E46 M3 beat out a 04 S4 by 0.2 seconds on the track, even though the S4 has a V8 and 4.3L engine with 342hp, doesnt mean that its going to bebeast. the primary reason as to why the M3's are faster, is due to the fact that they have a straight 6 engine, and their have 50/50 f/r balancing. E46 M3's just eat it up on the track. but there is a couple of good things about the new S4's, the QUATTRO!

i completely agree that the M3 is an awesome car and i am very impressed with it.however, that 2-tenths difference on paper, at least to me, says more about the S4 than it does about the M3. as much as i love and respect the M3 (E46), i'd take either the Gen II or Gen III S4 over it any day, based solely on the principle of potential. just an opinion ....</P><edited><editID>diabolical1</editID><editDate>38108.8007291667</editDate></edited>

I have a 2001 S4 and have tangled with a couple of M3s and they are pretty neck and neck. </P>
I have 30,000 and am going to wait till 50,000 to do mods because of the free service that i don't want to be voided but i will go with the engine and trans chip mod for $1000 that brings give the car a 60 HP boost and harder shift.</P>
Yeah...I got an Auto i get s**t all the time but i'm lazy so......</P>

Just curious.......isn't the new M3 going to be a V-8 anyways? I love both, but why does Audi force us to dump a ton of money into their TUNER car to make it a real tuner car? Just read the test on the 05 S4 Cabriolet and the best they could do with 350 HP was a 5.8 0-60? Come on Audi..step it up a notch....are we gonna need 500 hp for a sub 5 sec launch> The WRX STI does 0-60 in 4.8 with 300hp and only a 4 cyl.
