Default 01 S4 vs 02 - any difference?

Some advice, please:

I'm looking to buy either a 2001 or 2002 S4, but can't get a handle on the differences. Other than approx. $2600 resale value difference, were any changes made to the 2002s over the 2001s that make them a different car?

I am currently looking at two 2001s: both around $28k, one with 17k miles the other with 20k miles, both one-owner cars. 6-speed manual trannies and Audi Certified pre-owned, so warrantied for another 2.5+ years.

Is this a reasonable deal? Thanks.

The 2001 was split mid-year and the latest was called the 2001.5 S4. Technically the 2001.5 and 2002 are the same car. Most of us call it the 2001.5 S4. The only difference is the larger oil lines for each turbo on the 2001.5, but it's such an insignificant change (nobody has shown definitive benefits from the larger lines) that I wouldn't worry abou it. Of course, there were changes in the stock tires between the model years, but nobody cared about that because most swapped for better tires anyway.

BTW...

Hey Imola,

I posted a while ago about an A4 and wanting one, but now that I think about it I really want an S4 and the price difference is only like 2-3 thousand. Im looking at the 2000 models. Is there a big difference between the 2000 and 2001 models? Thanks

Kyle

Yes, there are a few more differences between those years.
2000's have an f-hose and do not have ESP. They also have the smaller S4 emblem for their interior and exterior badging.
2001's came with a 4 year warranty over the 2000's 3 year warranty and the 2001's had the option of getting a "sport package" which added chrome mirrors.
The Avant S4 was introduced in 2001, too.
Of course, minor changes were made to the software in all the ECU's for all the years of the S4.
