02 S4 Avant lurches
I've searched the forum but can not find a similar problem.
For the past few months my car has been lurching forward. at first it was only at highway speeds. it felt like the car went through a pothole-stopping and lurching in a quick succession, always twice and not to repeat until the next warm or cold start.
Now it happens even at low speeds or stopped at a stop light. the car lurches quickly twice. I can not find a common cause.
No codes (other than PO155 O2 sensor heater-which i reset).
i've brought it to the local independent twice. he changed the transmission fluid. but was unable to reproduce the lurch.
Anybody have any ideas?
No mods to my car, it has 116,000 miles on it and is current on service.

this could be your torque converter going out. It could also be slop from a blown differential bushing.
The problem you are having is similar to what i was going through. Does the "lurch" happen when the car is changing gears?

Fonzo,
I am not sure. it is possible that there is a gear shift happening while i am travelling fast. but i have experienced the set of 2 quick lurches (almost always two) while my foot is on the brake after coming to a stop.

If its not happening while your changing gears its probably your diff bushing. I had this same problem. I ended up buying the Stern Power Ring and it cleared up the problem. Do you feel a clunk when the car lurches? Maybe from the rear or engine area?
Fonzo,
Yes i feel a big clunk within the drive train of the car, hard to pinpoint exactly where in the car. Really feels like i juts drive through a pot hole, but of course, there is no hole. Is there more than one diff brushing for the AWD, plus can you give me a ball park on how much parts and labor cost for the Stern Power Ring?
Thanks again for all your help!

I'm pretty sure that most of the slunk is coming from a blown differential bushing towards the rear of the car. It could also be a combo of that bushing and your transmission and engine mounts being blown. Have you ever replaced any of them?
Here is the link to the stern power ring:
Stern Solid Rear Diff Mount (Power Ring), B4/B5 Chassis - JH Motorsports Inc. - -- JHM. Shifting
I also got the diff carrier bushings here too:
Stern Rear Diff Carrier Mount Bushings, Poly, B4/B5 Chassis - JH Motorsports Inc. - -- JHM.
This is the apikol unit:
Apikol Rear Diff Mount, Polyurethane, B4/B5 Chassis - JH Motorsports Inc. - -- JHM. Shifting you to
the apikol unit replaces the entire diff mount as well as the bushing on it. while the stern unit just strengthens the factory diff mount. i have the power ring on my car along with the diff bushing on the carrier. i have the apikol mount too, but havent installed it yet.
