02 S4 B5 Automatic/tiptronic off the line
Hey everyone,
I have a 02 S4 that is automatic/tiptronic and am just wondering the quickest way to jump off the line (yes I realize I don't have a 6 speed, but saving $4grand to get an automatic was a better option for me)-- I have toyed around but havent found anything consistant -- when I put it into tiptronic and don't touch it from 1 to 2 it shifts at about 3200 rpm it seems -- but I am just speculating.

I'm a tiny bit lost here. You mean it shifts at 3200 RPM in Tiptronic mode if you're just feathering the throttle right? If you floor it from a stop, it should shift from 1-2 near redline.
This is always a bit of an issue with tipronic guys (I have one also). There is no "official" way to get off the line as quickly as a 6-speed. You could do what's called "power braking" which means you hold one foot on the brake and slowly give it gas with the other foot until you reach ~2000 RPM and then just let go of the brake. This isn't advisable because: 1)It creates ALOT of heat in your transmission 2)You're still not getting off the line much quicker than just punching it.
Some people change out their torque converter (for durability and performance reasons) to a higher stall unit. A higher stall unit will feel much more like a manual transmission launch (it almost IS like a manual transmission launch).
I don't have any other advice, though, because there really isn't any way to rocket off the line effectively. I have heard, however, that getting a performance chipgreatly increases off the line punch, so that could be your $600 solution.
