B5 S4 K04 upgrade on the cheap?
Quick overview and ask.]
I have a 01 S4, have had it since 73k miles and now she has 129k!!
every thing has been solid, all I have done is replaced a wheel barring, the Diverter valves and did the timing belt. And a APR ecu flash. Its been a solid car for last few years.
I know now that the turbos are going, its making that whining sound and power is just not as smooth and not the same. Clutch still feels great and shifts very good, I just commute in it and always warm up/down,, very well taken care of.
I want to replace the turbos but I am not looking to do the whole kit and drop a lot of money on getting it to be super fast, I like power and k04's seem the way to go if your going to replace your k03's.
What I am asking is what do you think is the minimum I can spend? I have a couple friend that wrench and could do the work if I bought the parts and gave them time, I would pay going rate but they would probably kick me a fair discount on labor.
Can i purchase just the turbos? Ive seen some on ebay as low as $900 for a pair of k04's? is that legit? I know i would probably have to do some pipes and engine mounts and all that.
realisticly labor asiide what do you think i can step up to k04 replacements? Im down to spend some moeny, but this is kind of just my mountain car now and Im not looking to supe it up, just want it to run as find as it has and maybe get a little more bang out of it for minimal cost.
I know its probably a common ask, but what do the experts think? go big or dont go at all, or can i get away with maybe sub $2000 upgrade?
thanks!

dont trust ebay k04s. Nothing but horror stories out there. RP k04s are an option though, check those out, many people have bought them and I haven't heard anything terrible.
You'll be fine if you just replace the turbos, you will have more lag from the k04 but it won't be as bad as you might think. Instead of near instant spool you'll probably have time to take a breath before the boost but its totally tolerable and you'll get used to it quickly
