I live and Maine and I am in need of a performance car. I am very hard to please considering what kind of cars I have had seat time in. I am coming from a 2005 Dodge SRT-4. It was fast but FWD and lacked in the refinement and quality materials department. I am willing to spend more to maintain a car but nothing outrageous and it that is the case with this one I should probably walk away. I need a car that can handle some hard driving, playful driving... maybe a track day, maybe not. But most of all provide me with enjoyment, reliability and a care-free but take care of experience. I do not wish to own a car that is intimidating outside of warranty, that just screams headache. I would like to know what to expect with this car. I plan on spending $25,000 or so on a used 4.2L with 50-60,000 miles. I do not know what the weak spots on this car are but I would like to hear from you all that have experience with them.
I am not concerned whether or not this car will be satisfying in regards to practicality or fun. I AM concerned however with how expensive this car is to own. What needs to be done to it, when and what is the expected cost of these certain things? What are the problem areas and do they include the transmission, transfer cases, clutches? I am mostly worried about expensive things, and semi-expensive things and if this car is something one can expect to give more attention than it offers back. I am not looking to get involved with a money pit. I am ok with modifying only cosmetics and bolt ons along with some minor touches.
Could someone break this car down for me? The cold hard truth? What to expect... I am intimidated by Audis unpradeictability and high cost of ownership as is... is this car any different? Is this the car for me?

HAHAH i guarantee they day u drive a B6 S4 u will absolutley fall in love especially if ur coming from a turbo lag SRT4 hahah. But yea plenty of power, loads of torque and its all ready to go as quick as u can mash the pedal. the only down fall to the "plyfull" driving is its weight, however it makes up for that by being AWD and having as much HP as it does.
As for maintaining it... i dont think there is any huge issues as the B5 chassis had with the turbos but its still foreign and its awlways more expensive.

have you driven the b6/b7 yet?
The b6/b7 tend to be pretty robust, i havent heard of any big expensive problems that commoly happen. Having said that you will spend alot on fuel and Insurance will be more than your str4 too. Are you planing on moding it?

zero turbo lag in a SRT4? lmao. u must be on the stock turbo then, cause if u want ZERO lag ride a B5 S4 then we will argue. But yea im sure its very limited with stock turbo but i know the BT SRT4's around me have a nice little spoolin to do before they get some realll power.
But yea just go test drive the B6 youll love it, if u have a SRT im surprized u didnt try a B5S4 but then reliability can be an issue depending on driving style and how muhc/type of modding you do.

I had an AGP WGA that was always set at 18PSI spike, 16/15 fall-hold... it spooled rediculously quick. Peak TQ numbers for this car are at about 2400rpms... the 2.4L out of this car has practically zero lag and it was indeed stock turbo. I have driven a B5 and I wasn't thrilled to be honest and reliability was a huge concern but I drove a stock one. It wasn't a project I was interested in. I have driven almost everything under the sun including cars such as a 2007 M5 6spd, 2001 C4 Turbo... AMGs etc etc etc. But never a B6... and I don't plan on buying one unless I am sure I wont want to drive it off a cliff because of annoying quirks and money pit attributesORIGINAL: TKneedsS4

I will be modifying cosmetics and some bolt ons... that is about it. If I could make an off the top of my head list:
RS4 wheels... dark...
Springs
20% window tint
a short throw if available
exhaust (maybe headers not sure how that works with this car or if I care that much)
an intake
and I don't know about chipping it I always thought that german or not it was best suited for the 1.8T 2.7TT or a 2.0... NA doesnt strike me as a car to benefit much from a chip but what do I know.

Yeah, you *can* chip it, but you aren't gonna free up that much. You can get some downpipes/headers from VAST and an exhaust, but most buy them just to hear their beastly 4.2, not necessarily for the slightly added performance. The B6s are a little limited in terms of performance mods.
The B6 for the most part is very solid. The transmissions are strong enough to handle the power (both the Tiptronic and the 6-speed) and the transfer cases, etc. are pretty much problem free. The N/A 4.2 is a VERY strong motor. There might have been some problems with the early ones. I believe you have to do a timing belt service every 60k-100k if I'm not mistaken. (I'm kind of basing that on my B5 knowledge)
The B5 had some pretty bad reliability issues, PRIMARILY due to the turbos failing. This is why it's so critical to buy a "fresh" B5. If you don't, you're in for a nice, surprising $4000 repair. That was kind of Audi's fault for selecting the K03 as the stock turbo. They are inherently weak, and if the owner doesn't really know, or care about turbo maintenance (cool down, gradual warm up, etc) they call it quits even faster. The B6, obviously, doesn't have any of these issues since it's not turbo, and it's generally regarded as a more solid platform overall. I'm sure other members can enlighten you more about the various preventative maintenance issues, but if you find a good B6, it SHOULD be solid and not require much attention.

That is why I am interested in a B6 and not a B5... don't get me wrong the B5 is one of the first cars I buy and modify on Forza 2 when I have unlimited funds but it is indeed a video game and I am rich in it
I need something real life. I heard about some cam tensioner service that is extremely expensive on the B6... or expensive if something breaks because one didnt do it... I cannot remember. Is this even a good forum for B6 advice? It seems like everyone has a B5. Hell even the sticky is B5 only.

A chip on a b5 has a profound difference, if you had driven in a stage 2 i kinda feel like it would have been a little different experience. but thats neither here nor there, b6 sounds like what your looking for. Beyond the mods you said theres really nothing else to do short of a supercharger and that will cost you more than the car.ORIGINAL: R1ckyB0bbyyy
