The B5 S4 was produced to rival BMW's E36 M3 (95-99). When it was produced it was dubbed "The M3-Killer!" A stock S4 will beat a stock M3..chip them both..and the S4 would only see the M3 in the rear-view mirror (getting smaller..and smaller that is!).

I really dont mean to be difficult or casue uprest. But people really need to open their eyes at times. I see this debate all over the net. I LOVE that were all proud of our cars and want them to be the best in everything..but we really need to take it as it is. The fact is an S4 either model will not beat an M3 on a drag...(stock). Look at the numbers..it just doesnt do it... If you add turns..it is a different story. But if your talking straight line speed, the m3 takes it. Somewhere on here.. i thought it was this thread... might be a differnt one, but i posted the link to the topgear video of the m3 vs the s4. The m3 took the b6 s4 on the straight, and the b6 stock was faster than the b5. But the S won the road course by a second. So it does depend what youre talking about. But please dont be blinded by your car and thinking its the only performance vehicle out there.

They were made to compete with the m3, but the were still made to imporve in different areas they felt the m3 is lacking.

Total Agreement......

These cars are aimed at the same market segment, but take very different paths to get there. The e46 m3 is faster straight line than a b6/b7 s4. But they are close enough that in a real world situation it would come down to driver skill. The topgear comparision was interesting...cause I would have guessed the m3 would have had an advantage on the road course as well, due to rear wheel drive/handling.

In any event...each car has trade offs. s4 has allwheel drive (which I needed for inclimate weather) which is great, but adds to driveline power loss and an understeering car. s4 is a bit heavier, but I think feels better on long cruises and as a daily driver. M3 looks better (IMO) and has much more of a sports car feel...but I love a 4 door sports sedan.

Thank god they both exist and we have a choice!

sorry man, im pretty sure a b7 wont take an m3 on the line... they run like a 5.2 ish 0-60. they have the same powre that an m3 has, but is much heavier than the M. I would agree with the cadillac statement, if your talking about the cts-v. those things are ridiculous
Well. I have smoked several M-3's off th eline. Maybe the drivers weren't that good. In all events, once my exhaust and cold air is done, I will be in the pole position all the time.

How do you figure they have the same power? The B-7 runs 340 BHP stock.
The audi is a heavier car. The m3 is faster in a straight line and the s4 slightly quicker in the turns.

For the time being the Rs4 is the car to have but thats just untill the V8 m3 comes out and then audi will be one step behind again.

Yaeh, i agree. At first i hated seeing the new body style when the 5 series came out. But taht has already grown on me. Much the same for the audi. I really didnt like the b6 at first...then i hated the b7.. now i think theyre both sexy..... so they grow on you.
