Default buying ECU chip from a private party

I was surfin the web and came across an individual selling an APR S4 ECU chip... I inquired about it and was told that his APR was for the tiptronic, but he has a GIAC chip for my 6 speed.

He said he could sell it to me for x dollars but if I wanted, I could trade him my stock ECU and he could sell his ECU for cheaper.

There's apparently 3 different programs in the chip, one for regular pump gas, one for race gas, and stock.

My question is if this is legit and if there's anything I should be looking out for when purchasing a ECU chip from a private party and not from APR or GIAC directly.

Oh yeah, if this is legit and I do purchase the ECU, how do you change between the programs? Don't I need some handheld device to switch?

He probably wants to put his car back to stock for ease of sale. It happens pretty often. If I remember correctly you change programs with the cruise control handle - correct me if I'm wrong anyone!

as long as the person is reputable you'll be ok. Because if you buy a second hand apr chip you need to pay $150 if you need the dealer "apr" to take a look and have it transfered to you. I'm not sure about GIAC but i'm sure they are the same way as this protects licensed dealers.

APR is cruise stalk controlled - to swith prog
GIAC is flashloader or laptop and cable controlled- to swith prog

see AWE-tuning, they have all the info on giac, and see www.goapr.com for info on APR.

Personally, i would go GIAC.

Yeah i know who that person is. i just recently bought the giac x chip from him. I met up with him and he installed it for me and everything in like 15 mins. Most of you know him as marc but some know him by his blue mean machine known as 10secs4.

He is very legit and you have nothing to worry about.

I can vouch for Marc. He's legit. Buy the GIAC-X and enjoy your 70 ponies.

yeah, the flashloader is free off the website... he said he'd give me a generic connector for $25... i'm debating because I was thinking of purchasing a Vag Com and the Bentley Manual soon.
