Default Can someone explain "chipping"?

I keep reading about people chipping their S4s. Ok, what does this mean, why would you do it, how do you do it, does it affect your warrantee, etc.?

My biggest question is does it effect the safety of the stock S4? I am talking about 2005.5 S4 btw..

chip basically refers to an aftermarket chip you can purchase that will remap / reprogram - your cars onboard computer,
and adjust things like fuel efficiency, performance.. etc. etc

Usually warrantees become void after any type of aftermarket tuning... check w/ your dealer..

You should do a search - Im sure theres all kinds of threads related to this...

Can you undo the remappings of a chip? Like pulling it out simply returns it to stock state? Maybe have a switch that toggles between the two?

Negatory -
you can however keep a seperate stock ECU that you can switch out between the upgraded "chipped" one.

I believe GIAC has 3 states on thier chip-stock,chipped and valet. You toggle these states with the cruise control button.

Yes many tuners give the option to switch it back to stock mode.
For an 05 S4 , I think REVO and APR have programs that allow you to switch back to stock..
Gains are about 10-15Hp ...

Can you really notice gains of 10-15bhp? What conditions would you notice this? From a stop at a light? Would it be noticeable in an automatic or only manual?

Chips for normally aspirated engines typically aren't very popular as the gains aren't very good. 10-15hp is a very slight gain. You probably won't notice it very much.

ok GIAC has a flashloader for some soem of our cras. The APR has teh option oto toggle the stock and other modes with teh cruise control buttonl Its not gonna be a big chang ewith the V* s4 but the engines with turbo raise the boost and tahts why so many ppl use them. On the b5 s4 u get around 75HP gain by teh chip and around 40Hp and 80+ TQ on the 1.8T.
