Default Clutch/flywheel replacement

I have a 2004 S4, about 51600 miles and have been recommended to replace my clutch. I am having some major work done on the engine and was told my "clutch was low". The price they (a dealership) gave me indicates that they are also including a new flywheel, but I don't think they specifically mentioned that.

My question is 'Is common to have to replace the flywheel when replacing the clutch?' I called one other dealer and an independent shop and neither immediately mentioned the flywheel. They both did give me a price with the flywheel added, but it was almost after-the-fact. The original quote was for almost $1800, where as the other dealer gave me about $1750 (for clutch only) and $2765 with flywheel and the independent shop gave me almost $1500 for the clutch only and another $1K for the flywheel.

The original dealer didn't even say my clutch was "bad", just "low" and that replacing it now would "save me money" because of the reduced labor costs. I don't especially want to fork over an additional $1000 if I don't have to. I also very rarely do quick accelerations (more for gas considerations than anything else), but I did buy the car used. Even then, the guy from whom I bought it doesn't seem to be the type that would abuse his car (of course, you don't always know).

Anyone have any ideas? I'm in southern California, by the way.

^^ Find the money. You will save money in the long run if you do it now, considering it is worn. You normally don't have to replace the flywheel either, you can just have it resurfaced.

Default Thanks

I went ahead and ordered the replacement. I'm still not sure about the flywheel thing, but that's going to be replaced, too. All in all, I'll be saving about $600. Thankfully, the major work is being covered by my service contract (through Fidelity), although they took their sweet time approving the work. As of tomorrow (Friday), I'll have been without my car for two weeks and they only covered a rental for 10 days. Driving a Chevy Cobalt just isn't doing it for me.

The flywheel needs to be replaced or resurfaced. You could have looked at buying a aftermarket clutch like South Bend or Clutch Masters, I sell both at discounted prices.

I offer a Clutch Masters S4 4.2 package that includes the FX100(organic disk) with a Billet Aluminum flywheel for $1355 or the FX300(kevlar disk) package for $1475, this includes ground shipping in the 48 states.

Sorry if this is posted a little too late.
