Hello,

Is there an easy way to determine my ECU model number without taking the ecu out of the car?

I have a 2001 S4 6-Speed.

what do you mean..you talking about like abox vs mbox etc... or which aftermarket chip.. its not hard to look at the chip.. just open thehood and pop open thelid covering it and look at it.

 

I meant... how do i know if i have Sbox, Mbox, etc, etc...

 

umm.. damn..i always forget what years are what.. I think 01.5-02 is Abox.. 01 is mbox 00 hbox?? Dont quote me on that.. as im jsut guessing and cant fully remember. But a for sure way to tell.. is open up the box and look at the serial on the ecu. The last character should be a letter. if its 43242343A Then youre an Abox. etc.

 

this may sound like a dumb question, but what exactly is the different between the ecu boxes?

 

honestly... i dont really know.. Never cared enough to find out i guess.

Well, I opened the ECU case and found that it is an H box... I am slightly annoyed because rear-most screw was missing. This seems to indicate that the box was previously opened. I really thought I had a pristine S4 which wasn't modified before. Oh well.
