lol ur not gonna have to start "rebuilding" it but S4s need a lot more maintenance than most cars. like timing belt, turbos etc etc...
so pretty much its an expensive car to own!

ask the dealership some questions. Ask them if the timing belt has been serviced...or if the turbos are ok. Ask if its chipped or not. If it is chipped, then you can expect to replace the turbos sooner than if it were not chipped. Doing research on this car is your best friend. you have to know what to look for. if it were me, I would buy it in a second and just get all the work done that needed to be done. you cant go into buying a B5 with 80k and expect to come out without doing any maintenance. Obviously the car has no warranty unless u buy one, so use that in your favor. They will probably lower the price if you complain that you will have to get the timing belt serviced immediately which will cost 1200 bucks outright.

Give the VIN to the dealer, have them check the service history. I just posted more details about this on another thread. Look it up in my history.

I've been wanting to do this also, my a4 didnt come with any kind of maintenance records except that the owner told me that all the maintenance had been done at 90k (im assuming that also included the tb) anyway would i have to go to an audi dealership or can a VW stealership do it?? it think i know what the answer is but i just wanted to make sure since the closest audi stealership is about 2.5HRS away

Hmm, not sure about asking a VW dealership, I'm guessing they'd prolly tell you to go to an Audi dealer. But forget going to the dealer, just call them and have them fax the records to you. That's what I did. Like I mentioned in the other thread, all dealers should have records of warranty work that was done. However, when non-warranty work is done, only the dealer where the work was actually done will have the records...at least that's what I have been told when doing this in the past. On the service records, I don't remember there being any way of distinguishing between warranty vs. non-warranty work. I just used the mileage on the odometer as a guide.

I tried to get non-warranty work records from a dealer in CA when I bought my current S4, but they wouldn't give it to me for privacy reasons. However, there is a dealer about 10 mins from where I work (in Colorado) that has faxed me service records on 3 different S4s without any trouble. If the dealer you have in mind won't fax you the records, PM me and I'll give you the name/number of the dealer by me -- I'm sure they'll fax it to you.
