Greetings B5 S4 questions..
There easy to find. When I was looking for my S4 (3 months ago) there was over a dozen Advants for sale locally (75mi radius).
Since I own both an S4 & EVO let me tell you what you will miss.....
1. Turn in, the S4 does not turn in anything like the EVO, or is it as nimble. It's big & heavy, feels a lot more so then the EVO. Even with suspension mods it still be less then a stock EVO.
2. Moding it is much like the EVO, except for price, S4 parts just cost more, and most do less HP wise then the EVO. I've spend under $2k on the EVO to get over 300whp. My S4 will take, well 2-4X more for the same HP.
3. Maintaince, the S4 is a older car, and parts are just more expensive. Not only that but the S4 is so much more complicated then then EVO. The engine is lot harder to work on. Most parts are hidden on the S4 & some (like turbo) need the engine pulled to change. My Turbo back on the EVO took me 30min to put on. The S4 your looking at 3-5hrs for a Turbo back. Even changing spark plugs in a JOB, rather then 15min on the EVO. Don't even get me started on the O2's and other sensors on the S4!
Now the good stuff....
1. The car is much more comfortable! The suspension is a nicer riding setup. Even with my coil overs on the S4 it still rides better then the EVO.
2. The motor is less stressed, it likes, really likes low RPM's. I cruse around at 40mph in 5th, it WILL pull from 1500RPM's!
3. Fit & finish, the interior is just all round better, the stereo is also much better, and the car is so much quieter over the EVO. My EVO even has the Infinity setup.
4. Believe it or not, the S4 has less maintiance then the EVO, but it will cost more. Longer oil changes, and longer plugs, fluids etc.
5. I get over 23mph combined driving. The gas tank takes more then 14g of the EVO, so I'm not filing it up twice a week.
On the good stuff.
Most will say what ever is on their car is the best. Audi parts in general are higher quality then some of the EVO stuff. You get what you pay for. With that in mind most stuff is about equal. Most $1000ish coil over setups will be about the same. Most $500ish chips are about the same. The car is just so easy to drive! It does take corners slower, and not as well, but it has better power delivery, and just feels solid. You will change the way you drive.
"Best" is all subject to what you want on the car. Statis makes really good Suspensions, but so doesn't Startup Racing. Do you want $1000 CO, or $3500 CO?
Most of us don't do 0-60 stuff, we do something called FATS, I do know most highly moded S4's are in the 11-13sec area.
Most big upgrades tend to use most FACTORY RS4 parts, these are high quality but expensive compared to similar parts on the EVO.
I really can't think of a better daily driver, what else is there a E39 BMW 540 wagon?
