Help with S4 Exhaust!
Ok, I'm dumb and already posted this in the new member forum, but I thought I might get more help here...
'01 S4 6 spd, I want performance exhaust that will sound decent but stay quite! The APR exhaust was a little too much for me at $1000, anyone have any clue what I should be looking at!

First off welcome to the site. I'm fairly new here myself. The Borla Exhaust at the AWE tuning site is pretty nice. Not sure if its only the muffler or a full cat back. They have a sound clip of it on there as well. Good luck with your hunting and let me know what you find and if you wind up happy. I'm in the market myself and would like your review should you get the Borla.

welcome to the wonderful world of owning an Audi ...maybe you can look into MTM or Supersprint as other options?
But this is really my question, is that exhaust really worth that much more? I want max performance and some decent sound...I dont want to pay for the name brand!
And yes, I know this isn't a Stealth, I love my S4 even though I've only had it for about a week and I had to fly 1,200 miles to pick it up
Oh, and then another thing, I'm doing intake as well, and I was just looking at going with the K&N cone air filter...how far off-base am I with that?

welcome, i DONT kno how u lost to a stealth, either u donno how to shift or his car has some big mods to do it. U could get the GIAC chip, thatll help, umm look around there are other exhuast systems out there for cheap. Besides that, all other mods get way more expensive with bigger turbos and such
Ok, you got it mixed up here. I used to own a Stealth...never raced one in the Audi, in fact I am still trying to adjust to the car and so I've stayed away from racing it at all. And I know how to shift the car
The warranty on the car is still intact, so I am waiting for that to go out before I do any kind of electronic/powertrain mods. The exhaust and intake are about the only thing I can really do at this point. I am looking at the APR chip/tuned ECU, upgraded turbos, and maybe a front mount intercooler, but that will have to wait for now

Well it is not just teh name tha you are paying for it is also teh perfect fit, and nice noise (not loud when ideling but screams at high revs) And remember that teh muffler is 640 so like borlas and teh down pipes 650 i don't think borla offers those
the bottomline ... these cars do not have the backing in the aftermarket that more popular and moreover, more COMMON, cars are going to have. my point? you're probably not going to get around paying for a name brand with anything ... exhausts included. as GSalvatori said though, it's not just the name that you're paying for. among other things, it's the fit, the finish, the sound and the R&D that went into coming up their final product.
unless you've got a fully-equipped garage or know someone that does and is an engineering god, you'd be much better served buying a system for a quoted price than trying to fabricate something that breaks in 6 months or sounds like trash or even worse, flows like asthma. for that, just keep it stock. you're probably not going to get around the price when it comes to parts for these cars. the question is do you think it's worth it?
