Default Help with transaxle problem

I started hearing a clicking noise when I was turning to the left, so I figured it was just the cv joint. After bringing it into the dealer (because I also needed an A/C recharge) the mechanic told me that it is the entire axle that is messed up, something about the boots are perfectly fine but something went wrong and the oil isnt being moved back onto the joint and clumped up etc. Says a brand new axle for parts only is $900 then labor, or I can send it out to be fixed and resinstalled for $875. I guess I don't understand what is wrong and if those are my only two options. Can someone please help explain this to me?
