Ok so I purchased an 01 Audi S4 with 106,000 miles from a dealership yesterday. During my test drive everything seemed to be going great, no problems that I could detect. So I bought the car. I drive the car home and it drives fine. On my way from my house to my friend's to show him the new car, i'm driving in 2nd playing around with an sti and i go to shift to 3rd and it won't go into gear. I then proceed to put it in 4th which won't go in either. I try to downshift back into 2nd and it won't go. So i pull off the road and get it back into first. So now 3rd and 4th are working again but i have a very hard time getting it into first, like i really have to push it and it clunks a little as it goes in. It will NOT go into second, at all... To get it to third i have to push the shifter to the right in neutral like i'd be shifting to 5th, let it center again, and push it forward. Doesn't really seem like a synchro problem to me as the problem would have arised during my test drives.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Do I still have the right to take the car back and make them fix it or is it a done deal? thanks.

 

i dont have much info on it but i would definitely take that back and bitch them out for it because i dont think theres anyway something like that would just all of a sudden flare up.

 

Lemon law.. take it back and have them fix it.

 

Not to reiterate but yeah the dealer is going to have to bite the bullet on that one. It will be their fix and towing bill to get it there. As for the problem that sounds like a few things went loose at once and if one tightens up or catches then it willwork for a second, could be a worn syncro like you said but along with a slave or master cylinder that has play in it. That's too messed up, sorry to hear that, might as well put a good clutch in there while the dealers fixing it.

 

I would check clutch master and slave. I had similar problem and replaced both master and slave, problem fixed. I also had my trans rebuilt before that so i hope this fixes it

 

Get it back there quick, worst case is that you bent some internals and damaged your synchros and you might need a new tranny. that gets to be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

 

Just got back from work. I'm taking the car down first thing in the morning and the dealer said to get it down asap and he'll have a mechanic take a look at it and figure it out.

but in all honesty dont liek to your audi friends.
WE ALL KNOW you grinded some gears running against the sti cause its a new car and your not used to it. and NOW it has bad sliders and synchros. so go back to the dealer and have them fix it. that is all

did they sell you it with any sort of warrenty, like 50/50 or something? if you got it sold to you as-is, you may be royally screwed. since its a used car, once you sign the papers, they are immediately off the hook, lemon-law only counts for new cars, not a car that 7 years old. hopefully you get lucky and they help you out because they want to keep your buisness tho.
