Launching (Power Braking) a Tiptronic B5 S4?
Hey guys,
I have a 2000 B5 S4. It's bone stock, and I'm quite pleased with it. I bought the Tiptronic for many reasons, primarily convenience, ease of use, practicality in every day situations, and the fact that I got a good price on the car, so the transmission choice wasn't about to hold me back from the purchase.
Anyway, I know from experience and from forums like these that you can generally powerbrake an automatic transmission car to get a bit more of a "launch" from the car. Do any of you guys hold the brake and give it a bit of gas (only up to about 2000 rpm) to get up to speed a bit more quickly? It IS quite hard on the transmission, so I wouldn't be doing it often at all, I just like to have a bit more ammunition on my side in case of the occasional stop-light encounter. [sm=smiley14.gif]
I know that it'll never equal a proper manual launch, unless I change the torque converter to a higher stall unit.
So, does anyone do this? Any advice anyone can give? Thanks in advance!

I would not do it unless you don't mind fixing a broken torque converter. Not saying it will break, that it can break. If you are going to do it, at least get the trans flushed with new fluid, power breaking really heats up the trans.
If you chip it, the car will launch much harder by just pressing the gas.

Thanks for the reply 2k. I'm not dissapointed with the way it goes now, but it isn't a rocket off the line. I knew that a good chip, like a GIAC would give me about ~ 100 ft/lbs more torque at the crank, I just wasn't sure what effect it would have on the "off the line" acceleration. Glad to hear it really improves the situation.
