Default Need Buying Advice for '01 S4 86K - ASAP!

Hello guys,

I am about to buy a 2001 S4 with 86K miles on it for $11K. The car runs strong and passed basic/general CarMax inspection (interior/exterior, safety, brakes, etc… but the actual engine/turbos were not diagnosed). The car does not have any mods – it is completely stock. I do not know how the car was driven before. Since replacing the turbos is very expensive I am worried that I might buy “somebody’s problems”. What are the chances that I will have to invest in new turbos soon after buying this 86K miles s4? Thanks for the suggestions/advices in advance!

carmax car? All they sell is wrecked/repainted cars. If your going to leave it stock, buy the warranty, even if it is only a six month warranty... then take it everywhere and have everything fixed/addressed.

It's hard to tell how much life is left in the turbos, do you hear a siren like sound, or a grinding sound at all. These are telltale signs of a turbo about to go. Drive it around, and if it sounds ok, then it probably is for the time being. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try to haggle the cost of turbos into the price of the car though.

I'm not to sure were you got this information from. Perhaps you pulled it out of your buttocks? I've purchased about 4 cars through carmax and never had any issues...except a door falling off, hmmm carmax...

If there's an audi dealership nearby, they will run it through their certification check for a fee. Maybe $150 or so, plus they will compression test it for a little extra. But yeah, $11k for a car with 89k on it is a good deal.

I think carmax is who my lender used and they suck. They didn't drive the car during inspection and when I picked it up, I found out that the rotors were warped and the ball joints were bad. If I had know, I would have negotiated a little more off the price. Lesson learned, nothing beats due diligence.
