Nice goin mate
Hey has u B7 got the engine/chain whine like u B6 yet?
congrats on the new car, white is fantastic on the sedan. sorry to jack the thread but, what sound are you guys talking about? i'm just over 10k miles and i hear something that sounds like an overworked pwr steering pump. is that the chain? i've been thinking about taking it in for that, but nothing changed with performance.

Hay Cheese Eater the chain whine was commonly prob with alot of the early B6 S4 like the 03/04, and it was the timing chains that made alot of rattling noise moreso on cold start up - but its still very noitcible when hot

Some people have had them changed along with the tensoiners under warranty - its a massive job coz i think the whole engine has to come out?[sm=exactly.gif] From what i have seen and heard it hasnt made much of a diff

It wont affect u performance, it mite irritate u with a bit of noise though[:'(]

Just wondering what revisions Audi has made to the 4.2 to eliminate this, or if its still the same?

i'm wondering on the noise myself. my car is a year old, and i always let it idle until it drops to 800rpm. (okay, maybe 5 or 6 times max i took off before it settled, but never above 4000). it just started about 2 weeks ago. i hear it after the car settles to 800rpm, but don't hear or feel a difference in anything at start up or in motion above 5 mph. but, warmed at idle or up to parking lot speeds, i hear it and feel a slight vib in the accelerator pedal. i'm off tomorrow, so i was gonna crawl around the engine bay and see if i could find the culprit but who knows; i stop the car with it running to open my garage and with the hood down, the sound is not isolated, it is just in the engine bay area. not so much here, or here, ... but right around here.

if u can get some1 to just give it a slight rev so u can hear if there is any noise
The chain whine is moreso a question of can u live with the sound rather than it going to do any damge to the motor?

yeah, i'm gonna look into it tomorrow. the problem i have is if that is acceptable chain noise, i really have a hard time telling all my friends how quiet the ride is "until you reach 70 or 80, then it gets noisy like your detroit garbage does at 50". it was much more humiliating to let them know that without the extra noise. but like i said, after initial warm up, it sounds (constantly) like a power steering pump in a hard turn with little/no engine assist; just some goofy whhirrrrr that impedes nothing yet sounds and feels weird.

The whine is just a design issue, I guess. I test drove many S4 before getting this one and they all made the same noise. No point in pulling the engine and doing all the work, it will just come back.

Supposidly the same chain system is also used in the 6-series, just mounted in front perhaps? The 8-series uses a belt so no noise there.

Chesse Eater, what u are discribing sounds like the symptoms of the 'chain whine'

As u said jza80, it wont lead to failure, and most Audi dealers wont do anthing bout it anyway?

25th if u after louder then the Labree or Borla would be the next exhaust to go for

Thanks for the prop, I really wasn't looking for a white car but I really liked the white color when I saw it.

The solution to your sound issue is to sell me your Miltek and get a non-resonated one!

You see thats the thing i got it non-res. and it still isnt loud enough. Would it be bad to take off the mufflers and straight pipe it?
