Question Re: newer s4 vs. older s4
it really just depends on how much you want to mod it.. i traded in my B5 S4 for a new B7 S4.. much more room and better features.. but on just performance alone.. stock yes the b7 will be faster.. the b5 there are more hop-up parts available.. partly due to it being a trubo and it also being 6 years old.. there are now parts being released for the B7.. i actually have intake and a full exhuast system.. and once APR comes out with the supercharger.. i will be getting that.. even with the intake and full exhaust i can easly beat m3s and actually can stay up with my friends 2000 porsche carrera.. (non turbo).. the only downside.. is if you get the B5.. there will issues that you will have to look for.. any and all B5 S4 owners know most if not all the things to look for and things that need to be replaced if you are going to mod it a bit.. if you need further help.. let me know.. i can break down the goods and bads of both of them
Thanks for the help.
You mention more room: is there more leg room for driver - i am 6'5" and mostly legs, so lotsa legroom is crucial.
Next dumb question: are b6 and b7 not turbocharged? I infer this from your post

Leg room for the driver isnt really an issue...even in the b5. I am 6'3" and i have more than enough room..i could even go back farther and i sit pretty far away. Your backseats wont have any room behind you however... but thats not really your problem
The b5 is 97-2002... and is a 2.7l v6 biturbo. teh b6 was 2004-2005.5 and is a 4.2l v8 as well is the b7. The b7 is just a different body style..
b7s4,... i have a hard tiem beliving your easilly beating m3's. the m3 is considerably lighter with about hte same power as your s4. While the intake and exhaust help... they dotn give considerable power. the stock s4 is about what...5.3 -5.4 0-60.. while the m3 is like 4.8. Im rough guessing those 0-60 as i cant remember off the top of my head... but i think thats about right.
Ive driven both... And my opinion was (at least between an 02 m3 and an 04+ s4 (b6 or b7)) I would get the s4.. m3 is slightly faster.. but the s4 is much much more comfortable...the interior is much nicer... jsut the luxury was much better than the m3. plus you have the awd. I chose to get an 02 stage 3 s4... cause i wanted the performance..plus it was a little cheaper than the newer s4.. the b5 s4 is going to be by far your most performance (modable) oriented choice.

no problem man.. let me know if you have any more questions.. I spent a lot of time researching and driving many of those cars along with others in that "category" about 6 months ago before i finally found one i wanted.
sounds like i am in the same boat you once were in months ago.
can you give me the cliff notes version of what the 'stage 3' you have entails? did you buy it like that, used?
thanks

02 vs 04 nearby to me, links below:
the 02 has chip and other mods ....don't know what, makes me worry a little about being a beat on car (like my M3)

Sure thing.. My car is an MTM stage 4... Which is esentially the same as most other tuners stage 3. Somewhere along the lines, MTM added a stage. But it contains most thigns youd need. K04 turbos (basically the rs4 turbos) umm mtm exhaust, chip, injectors, rs4 fuel pump. k & n air filter, few other things. If you go to www.mtm-online.de/en and look up the audi s4 you can see the options on their kits. I also have koni suspension, 332mm stoptech brakes up front, and rs4 clutch. It makes roughly 400 hp and about 18-19 psi. MTM lists about 370.. i feel thats a bit conservative. and honestly... there arent too many cars you cant keep up with or beat in a stage 3. I love it, the feeling of the torque is awesome. For additional mods (at least performance wise) i will get some better intercoolers.. probably awe side mount. Havent decided between keeping it more stealth or geting a front mount. And then a short shifter. With stage 3, you also take care of several of the issues that tend to go wrong with the b5 version. The k03 stock turbos tend to go out, so you have those replaced.. along with soem internal things liekt he throttle body boot and such. Also, best to find an 01.5 or 02, those have a few minor changes that improved some of the problems as well.
I bought used from a 60 yr old pilot down in sarasota florida. It had 25k miles on it. He had jsut recently bought a boxster and wasnt really driving it anymore.. He was very thorough. He had a 3 ring binder with every reciept of anything done or modded on the car. I also spoke with his lead tech and him on the phone before i headed down there. THe mods were also done From joe hoppen at hoppenmotorsports.com who is the sole importer of MTM products into the US. SO everything was done pretty well.
My best advice is to keep digging and searching. Talk to people that have ins. I had about 2 or 3 guys taht were searching the dealer auctions for me. It is a good way to score a good deal some times. And go and test drive as many as you can...
What area are you located? Find someone who has a stage 3 in your area and see if you can get a ride along and see how you like it.. and drive any other car your interested in and just do your homework.
Let me know any other questions.. i had a lot to cover there, i may have left some stuff out.

That seems liek a pretty decent price on the 2002. It worried me too on having a car thats been modified and then if its been beat on or not. Generally what ive learned though, its not so much how the car was driven (well not totally...) but how well its taken care of and maintained. If the driver followed proper warm up and cool down procedures esp after running it hard, and proper oil maintainence, youre proabbly fine.
I see your in PA then...based on yoru autotrader locations. PA is like the audi haven.. there are a lot of s4's out in that area, so you should have no problem trying to find one around there. Go onto audiworld.com and see if anyone in youre area would be up for giving you a ride in a stage 3. Or even audizine.com

I'm in Delaware. Found out more about the 02 S4:
The owner told me this on email: Since I have owned it I have put a RS4 Clutch & Flywheel in the vehicle. Since the vehicle has the AWE- GIAC-X chip I felt that the stock clutch just wouldn't do.
So those are the mods. This owner has only owned it one year, so prior history is still unkown and i'm waiting to find out more from him.
It doesn't have near the mods you do sooks, but i doubt most people do from reading your list.
If you don't mind answering, what did you pay for your 02 (i take it you bought it stock from the old guy). Just using that as a mild benchmark, despite geographic and time differences.
thanks again.
