S3 and S4
I am looking at buying one off the above cars.
Looking for more info on turning side (engine)
What power can the standard internals take before upgrading?
Whats the best mods ( chipping, turbo upgrade, exhaust etc) How much for each???
What to look out for before upgrading power?
Also is there any problems with the 2.7 TT or 1.8T engine regarding reliability if increasing the power? (mileage)
And the final Q is how easy are the above engines to work on if DIY mech?
Thanks in advance
Craig

Craig,
Glad to hear you are shopping for an S4 or A4! I dont know what your budget is but ill answer your questions assuming you have the ccash to buy any bi-turbo S4. If you are on a tight budget, the whole thing may be a bad idea beause Audis are kinda expensive to maintain, and even parts are expensive if something breaks. that said, here goes:
first of all, if you are looking for a bi-turbo, the most desired ones are 2001.5 or newer. Mid year in 2001 Audi made some changes to solve some weak links in the ppre 2001.5 S4's Those changes were 1) larger oil lines feeding the turbos, because turbos were failing 2) Eliminated the f-hose, which is one of the induction hoses for the trubo system. More info on this can be seen here: http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1407640.phtml
The standard internals can handle the added stress of mods like exhaust, and performance chips. With these basic upgrades, you can expect power in the 320 hp range.
thinking bigger, you can go to a turbo upgrade, replacing the turbos with K04 trubos from the audi TT. This, combined with some aftermarket parts such as hoses and diverter valves, you will be around 440 hp. As with any mods, generating more power is harder on the entire engine. Turbo upgrade should run you around 4-5 grand, plus hoses, exhaust, etc.
Reliability with both the 1.8T and 2.7 TT engines are case by case. You will want to see maintenance records to confirm oil changes and all audi recommended maintanance. anywhere between 60 and 90k miles, both these engines will need a timing belt and water pump replacement. If someone has a car and you are considering buying, find out if this has been done because it will run you around 1200 bucks. Aside from that, you want to find one that has been cared for, with the owner doing turbo cool-downs and regular engine maintenance. The best case sccenario would be to find a car that has warranty remaining, either factory or aftermarket. These are available up to 100k miles or more and will certainly pay for themselves over the life of the car.
Basic maintenance can be done DIY, but for most procedures, i would recommend letting Audi do the work. These engines are much more complex and delicate than a pushrod V8 like i was used to. Educate yourself about your car, and start small. You may think you are saving money til you mess something up and it costs you an arm and a leg to get it right again.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions you have, and take some time reading through this forum. there is lots of great information on many of the questions you may have.

I would be cautious on very high mileage S4's. Again, you will have to see if turbos have been replaced, when the timing belt was last replaced, etc. Above that, you have to remember that without a warranty, anything that breaks will be very expensive to replace. It is frustrating, but virtually everything on Audis is expensive. I guess it is the price we pay for driving such fun cars. I would really recommend looking for something with less miles and some warranty left so you can have everything looked at and anything that is damaged can be replaced before you have to cover the bill.

Looks like i will have to get saving if i want a S4 with warranty.
What is the best A4 quattro to get power from?
I already own a Mk3 Turbo Astra which i converted myself and is quick for a FWD. Soon to be 380bhp.
13.1sec 1/4mile @ 114.8mph
Just looking for something 4x4 and not JAP.
