S4 Check Engine Light
Hello Everyone!
I am looking to buy a B5 S4 (2000). I test drove one and the check engine light was on. I asked him why and he told me that it was on because the Oxygen sensors are sensing a lot more Oxygen/Air because of the bigger downpipes and that this is a very common occurrence in cars with upgraded bigger downpipes.
Is this true? It is definately a very nice car and it has records for everything? Your thoughts.
Thanks,
Oshburg

Well before you trust the guy get your hands on a ODB II scanner and scan the computer to see what code comes up. (the plug for the scanner is slighlty to the left under the steering wheel.) About you question I dont know if its true with the O2 sensors and all but there is something else you might want to look into. How many miles those the car have? Anything above 50K try to listen to the engine start up cold and hear for the famous dentist drills, if you get that the turbos are gonna go soon. Also at 60K lots of maintanance is required. And if its anything above that mileage be very careful and get some type of warranty.
Now why did I tell you all of this. Cause I recently spent $5000(+labor)on replacing turbos and doing the basic 60K chek up.
Good Luck

The car has around 70,000 miles on it. He had the timing belt replaced at 50,000. The turbos are the originals and he has had an MTM chip (ECU rempap) on it since 15,000 miles. Along with the chip he also has the exhaust done (Cat back exhasust, catalytic converters, downpipes). He has had all the work done at an Audi Dealership and he has all the records. He says he religously warmed up and cooled down the turbos.

Of course he did, everyone does, especially those trying to sell their s4's...
pull the intake boot and intercooler pipes and check for oil. take it to a tech with some s4 experiance.

Find out what the codes are.
Bigger DP's will not throw a CEL, but no cats will.
Before you buy it, make sure you have enough $$ to fix it!
The cars are solid, if it drives well, and looks good, then don't really worry about things
to much, but do find out what the codes are.
It could be $50 to fix, or $5000. The cars are not easy to work on, and parts are not cheap.

The guy selling it is a private seller. He just gave me the telephone number of the Audi Dealership that works on the car. He is a couple hundred miles away from me. If I ask him to have it scanned and give me the codes would you guys be able to tell me what they meant.
