YES 17 is too damn young for an S4...you know why??? cuz i had to bust my *** off since i was 17 through college and working and then sell 2 vehicles to finally have the (modern) car of my dreams. but, hell, if you have the meanes now, DO IT. just make sure you can afford the upkeep and the insurance, you dont want it gettin repo'd or sittin in the garrage, or workse, wreck it w/o insurance. oh yea, and ive never been in a wreck while behind the wheel...knock on wood...i waited 6 years to get mine, im 24 and its my 12th vehicle, and i intend on hangin on to it for a while, its just that nice.

I never said the S4 wasn't a fun car - far from it...though in many ways I do think that my MR2 was more fun to drive...what I'm saying is that the S4 is basically a hopped up version of a family car and why get a family car when you don't have to/don't have the family...because right now its impractical for me to own & drive a 2 seater (as much as I would love to have one. And flat out speed/power is not the do all and end all to fun & satisfying driving...particulary for younger/less experienced drivers. A little 2 seater or such with a stick that you can rev out and learn how to drive quickly in the twisties arguably IMO gives far more bang for the buck. I understand the safety aspect of the S4 - and thats great and certainly a consideration - and I'm not saying don't get the S4 - if you can - and if you really think it is the car for you - but make sure its really what you want - really what is best for you. I know that I lusted after the S4 (Avant) since it first was introduced...I really felt it was the vehical for me - at this stage in my life. I'm sure I would have loved one in my late teens or twenties if there were such a car - and while I arguable could afford one - though not practically - in my situation - in fact I had great fun with the cars I could afford - beginning with a 1981 Toyota Starlet (85 hp 1.2 L RWD hatch) that could rev out and was a real hoot to drive - I had incredible adventures with that car. My dream car when I was younger was always either a fiat spyder or a Triumph or an MG...but when Toyota came out with the MR2 I was hooked...just needed more power (and a convertable) was my thinking. Well - when the t-top Supercharged MR2 was introduced - I got one (after telling people for years that I was going to get it...just like I did with the S4! lol)...and boy did I have fun with that car...and only recently (last year) sold it...and to a racer I know who will be fixing it up...and only under the condition that I get to drive it when he is finished! And besides another "family" car I've owned recently (1995 Mazda Millenia S)...and my Mustang - which has been in the family since brand new...and now the Audi S4 & BMW 330 - these are all the cars I've ever owned in my life...and I have to say I really have loved each one of them (aside from wishing that the Millenia was a stick!)...so to me cars are very special - and I just don't purchase one because of what I think might be hip/coll or for status or what have you - I reserch my cars and know what I'm getting and why. So just get what you truly believe is right for you and make sure you can afford it...and by all means - try to stay out of (major) trouble...

Damn, this board is full of a bunch of rich kids huh! I wish mommy and daddy would have bought me my first car!

If your folks will buy it for you, then get the S4. Keep it stock till you get comfortable or bored with it, then think about modding it.
I'm sure that if they are buying you this one, then they'll probably buy you another car when you get to college. By then you should be ready for an even better car an step up from the S4. Maybe a Porsche for graduation day?

Go for it. Wow, seems to be a lot of hatters on this... saying he shouldn't or can't handle it. Who's to say he doesn't go to the track and has had lessons from driving/race instructors? There are a lot younger drivers than me that can drive better and a lot older that suck. I have an 05 s4, its great, but like someone said... look at the 2 door sports cars. I love my car...but I also love the 997s ps.. i'm 29 I think its just like anything.. get the feel for it and you too will average 100 on the highway, cut in and out of cars, install a V1 and a laser shifter and well, you get the point... good luck! PS.. why is everyone so PISSED?

No idea what "a lot to handle" means this day and age. 17 year olds getting drafted to play pro sports, but they can't drive an S4? 17 year olds nearly able to go to Iraq, but can't drive an S4?

I've seen 40 year old people who drive like crap. I think it all depends on your maturity level and skill. If you speed frequently, then it doesn't matter what car you're in. On the plus side, this car is loaded with safety features, and it is an AWD.
17 Year olds can get a job and earn an S4 with their own money too...

im 16 and drive an S4, and some of my friends of the same ages cars include: M5, E36 M3, E46 M3, STi, etc. we all take pride in being the ones who dont get in wrecks and dont get tickets because we respect our cars. kids who drive civic dx's and just floor it everywhere and will only be going 70 by the time theyre at the next redlight are the ones who get tickets. as long as you know your car and dont push it ont the street, you should be fine. treat it properly, and dont show off too much.

Yeah I'm sure that whole .5 years of driving expierance was pleanty to quality you as a "safe" driver. I'm sure you guys NEVER have or will be racing like a bunch of spoild teens.

Life is short! Drive what makes you happy. Lessons will be learned no matter what you drive, some will just be more costly. It's those lessons learned that builds maturity.
