Default Simple ways to add horse power?

Hello again,

As some have already noticed I don't know much about cars. Actually, to say that I don't know anything about cars would already be saying too much. Still however, I am interested in adding a few more pony's to my 2001 S4 and improving performance.

I am curious what some possible ways of adding horse power would be...both expensive and affordable? What have some of you done to your cars to boost the acceleration/speed a bit more? I've been reading things online but in many cases I either don't exacly understand the terminology or the suggestions seem all out strange(like removing the air filter completely....which certanly would boost horsepower as I can imagine but then I would have all sorts of muck in my engine). I've read about the K/N(I think) Air Intake System which is suppose to boost horse power and wondered if anyone has experience with that.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

ok... Well in general with a turbo car your first mods are chip, intake, exhaust. Thats your bread and butter. You can get a chip for anywhere of the range of 500-1000 bucks based on power curve and gains. Chips do wonders for the s4. exhaust would be your next best bet to free up horsepower by allowing more air to flow. for $$ your about in the same range as a chip. Intake is a bit different on our cars as there isnt really a good intake system to either cool the air more efficiently or force more air through. From what ive seen, a k&n drop in filter for like 50 bucks is as good as anything. People say the x-1 intake (from a guy on audiworl) is the best but the line is very long to get your hands on one and i personally havent seen any tests showing its good but word of mouth is nothing but positive. in addition you can do whats called the darintake (which scarzie just posted a pic of on his "saturday mods" thread. you can also do a search for that on audiworld on a DIY install. it basically involves a modification to the airbox to bring in cooler air.

Thats your standard efficient mods.. From there your price will go up quite a bit. your best bet would be the kit that renn-art just posted about the k04 kit for a heck of a price. Which means... new turbos. your car has a k03 turbo, k04 turbos are what are in the rs4 and flow more air and are more reliable. Along with that, you can get bigger injectors, new fuel pump, bigger MAF, rs4 y-pipe and bigger intercoolers. That is your standard issue stage 3 setup which can put you in the 400 hp range and could be done in the range of about 4k-10k based on parts and labor.

hope this helps you out a bit... feel free to ask some more Q's or if you want me to elaborate on some stuff or i wasnt clear on some tihngs.. and as for my mods...just look at my sig and ask any Q's you want [8D]

will actually put you higher than that.. Its hard to say how much, because dyno results will vary so much based on teh settings used on the dyno and ambient temperatures. There was a post fairly recently on audizine of a guy putting down something like 300-310 WHP off just an mtm chip. which, imo is pretty high, but thats like a 100hp gain. however i think off just a chip an average put down on the dyno would be in the 255-275 range. While a stock s4 would do about 190-195 whp. And i think you could expect probably 10-25 out of the exhaust.

Thanks sooks...that sounds really good.

I went online looking for mtm and this is the link that I found with some of their products:
http://www.mtm-online.de/en/index.php?nav=3

probobly some of the first things that I will change are the intake, add chip, and exhaust. so basically now I have to look up shops and see where I can get the best deals on the accessories. i'm not sure whether the prices on the link the i provided are in euros or something else..but in either case I'll find out and do all the conversions and compare them to whatever other prices I find.

thanks again on the info..very helpful...and if you know of any online places that sell some of those accessories at a more affordable price, feel free to list them.

Yah MTM is great, i really regret not getting their chip from some of the power gainsi ve seen in other cars, in some cases it seems to be more powerful than GIAC... Im sure once my chip is installed iwont regret it tho

yeah... Theres a lot of people that hate on mtm saying its too conservative and that giac is the only way to go. giac, is powerful and has shown good gains. But i dont really buy into that... MTM just isnt as common as giac around the US and IMO Giac is a much harsher chip in terms of spikiness and the mtm is much smoother for a daily driver. and you can always advance the timing on it if you want a bit more power. But each of the cihps are going to show great gains.. i mean unless your dedicated to drag racing is there a serious difference between 12.1 and 12.3

stick on mods, the engine parts have limits and you need to go inside for proper mods port and polish/exhaust plus much more but is it really worth it??

MTM price drop from 795 to like 550 I believe search hoppen motorsports. I saw this on another post. I already have it and love it. Working on the UUC exhaust from another member and Modded my airbox till I homegrow a intake system that will work. 50/50 diverter valve need to be installed so I'll post results from that.

Don't waste money with doing the intake. On the stock car you will not going to gain anything.
Here is what I would do.....

1. MAINTAINCE! Make sure every thing is OK before you mod it. If parts are on the way out, they WILL fail once you increase boost.
2. Chip (I have the GIAC one) & make sure you change out the Diverter valves with it. 710n's are a cheap way to go. Or get nice aftermarket ones.
cost $500 chip, $75-350 for DV's
3. ITG, or other foam panel filter with Darintake, that's drilling holes in the bottom of the airbox where it meets the fender liner.
Fitler $50, Darintake FREE
4. Cat back exhaust, $500-1500
5. Downpipes, they will help with lowering the boost curve, basically they spool the turbo's quicker and add some HP.
$1200-1600 (they are a PITA to install)

6. After all this, you will want to get the suspension & brakes done, the car will feel TOTALLY different from stock, and be MUCH, MUCH faster.

7. Then comes the K04 kits, there all in the mutly thousands price range.

Find out how much you want to invest, and how important it is to you. Once you start, it's very hard to stop! It's like crack with a $25 hooker.
