Sorry, I had to do it - my newbie question thread...
Hey guys, I am searching all the time for the perfect 2001.5-2002 S4. I've been doing as much 'homework' as I can but I do still have more questions. I really appreciate any help. I hope these questions don't sound too dumb as I have read the FAQs and a lot more. Anyway, let the questioning begin (sorry for the long post):
1. How exactly can I spot the difference between a 2001 and a 2001.5? I think I read build dates of October '01 and later were .5s? Where on the car can I find the build date?
2. Cars.com lists the curb weight at 3593 lb while the FAQ sticky lists it at 3812 lb. Please tell me it's closer to 3600 lb. Also, do any of you guys get serious about weight reduction? For example, I got my 3200 lb Maxima down to 2900 lb without sacrificing luxury/options, comfort or safety. I would like to put my S4 on a diet.
)
3. I'm sure this is a common question but I never saw a great answer. Mod for mod, is the 5AT or the 6MT S4 faster? I know sticks are typically faster with NA (or even supercharged) cars but it's my understanding that turbo autos are faster than sticks(the turbo doesn't stop spooling when you take your foot off the gas).
4. Stock 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times?
5. I see the stock HP and TQ listed in the FAQ and on cars.com (250/258) but that's obviously to thecrank. What is the wheel HP for a stock S4? The 6MT? The 5AT?
6. How does the automatic transmission hold up, particularly on highly modified S4s?
7. I know the sticky touched on this a little but, how is working on the car? I try to do absolutely everything myself from preventative maintenance to major mods/upgrades. I hope I will be able to do all/most of my own work on the S4. ?
8. From cars.com I read all about the standard features as well as the optional packages/features. Could somebody confirm that this list of standard equipment is accurate? I ask only because I see a few errors in the Maxima list (ex. it lists the Maxima as having retained accessory power but it does not). Anyway, the Audi has quite an impressive list of standard features!
)
9. The one feature I was bummed to see missing was memory seats. No memory seats?
10. Do the rear seats fold down?I didn't think they did but I believe cars.com implies that they do.
11. These cars come with keyless entry remotes, correct? What are the exact functions? (Ex. my Maxima's remote arms/disarms the alarm, unlocks one door, unlocks all doors, locks all doors, panic, pops the trunk, rolls down the windows).
12. From 2000 to 2002, what are the exact year to year differences? I did read about some of the year to year changes here but I thought there might be more? I can tell you every little thing that changed from year to year with the 4th generation Maxima ('95-'99) but not the Audi S4... yet. ;o)
13. Can someone confirm that this is the complete list of available options? I really want heated seats and Homelink. Is the premium package and cold weather package rare or common? Also, it states that the premium package includes a glass sunroof. What do you get without the premium package? No sunroof or a steel sunroof (I remember my 1990 Audi 100 had a steel sunroof)? Lastly, I am assuming the OEM navigation is probably very rare? And, if I'm not mistaken, it's in the gauge cluster, right? Not in the center console? I suppose I'll let the navigation go but I really hope that heated seats, Homelink and a sunroof is nothard to find. ?
14. I see that the sport package replaces the wood with silver dash trim and provides two tone seats. I would like the silver/aluminum instead of wood but I prefer solid black leather seats. Is it possible to change the wood out for silver later?
15. Silly question but what are those two, raised rectangular panels on the front bumper just below each headlight?
16. Is there a link to factory Service Manual (FSM) in .pdf format?
I thought I had more questions but I'm blanking now. But I suppose that's enough anyway. Thanks so much in advance guys!

to name off a few i saw...
-I believe it's closer to 3800, but I'm not sure if that's wet or dry
-6 speed is "faster"
-to the wheels it's around 215 I think
-it's not the easiest car to work on

-I think the car is pretty easy to work on
-Key does all the same things except pop the trunk ( but its a switchblade
)
-Yes you can change the wood trim to aluminum or carbon fiber
-Those two things you see under the headlights are the headlight washers, they pop up and squirt pressurized washer fluid on your headlights
-Rear seats do fold down
-No memory seats
-You can tell the earlier S4 from the later ones with the differant S4 badges. Earlier ones have the Audi sport badge and the later ones have the big S4 one
-Stability control (ESP) was not available in 2000...youre better off without it anyway, it sucks

1. YEs build dates are the only realy way of telling. not sure of exact dates. most 01.5's will have the newer badge style for the S4 symbol also.
2.Yes i believe the weight is closer to 3800, when i went to the track i had everything in the car cept the spare but i also had some random things around the car. and i weighed in at 3740 i htink.
3. 6mt is faster tips after being built up can get close but as soon as the stage 3 goes in the 6mt will be much faster down the track.
4. stock 1/4mile is high 13 low 14 depednding on driver. i htink the stock record is like 13.2 or something like that.
5. wheel hp is usually just around 200 whp usually just under.
6. Tip holds up well if you build it and get it to Level 10 (dunno what that consists of cause im a 6mt guy.
7. The work is dooable it just takes time cause eveything is electrical, there is no room to work on it in side the engine bay. i dont do my own because 1 i dont have the time to learn cause it is my only car and i just need my things to get fixed asap.
8. only the 01.5 and newer have the traction controll button, older dont have that option. msot of that looks correct, there was also Navigation option for the car, and if u have a canadian spec S4 it will not have a sunroof, the sport package S4's have brushed aluminum mirrors and nappa/alcantara suede inserts for the interior.
9 correct no memory seats. but im the only driver for my car so i dont need to chnage it.
10.yes that fold down, you also have the middle drop down and it has the ski bag in it soo u can put your skis into your cabin without getting snow and crap everywhere and wihtout dropping the seats and loosing seating for passengers.
11. yes comes with keyless entry. lock unlock and panic, if you VAG com the keyfob you can control the windows up and down form the remote.
12. umm 00-01 is smaller turbo oil lines, and has F-hose (prone to tear.) 01.5-02 has revised oil lines and no f hose. thats all that really matters...
13. As far as i know the premium package was automatic un the states, a majority of them are cold weather package also, oem navi was terrible for this car and is slightly rare. yes its in the guages, cold weather package means heated seats. is homelink the buttons for the garage door opener? cause if so yes its built into drivers side visor. and before stated if u get canadian spec S$ there is NO sunroof and no fog lights.
14. Yes it is possible to change out those panels, alot of peopel change to silver and black piano wood is also very popular.
15. those panels are headlight squirters it pumps out a TON of washerfluid for the headlights, the pop up like 3 inches and unloads on the headlights, i htink it is totaly unneccesary and it wastes soo much fluid.
16. ummm not sure where i saw the factory service manual i htink it is in the S4 faq at the top of the forum.
let me know of more Q's,
i usually dont post liek this but i was borrred haha

i have the (ESP?) button for the traction control next to my fog lights, but my s4 logo's are the older version ( red with the silver ) so is it safe to say i have the 01.5 and my badges are just old???
(sorry I'm cutting in!)

No, ESP was included in all 2001 models. The differences between the 2001s and the 2001.5s are not features. They are adjustments/improvements...like the larger oil inlets to the turbos.
Dude seriously i have seen every one of those things countless times. GO to the stickies and read them See the links in the stickies, they have info too. www.s4biturbo.com, edyjuns s4 directory, and search search search its so easy!
Anyway, i agree with Tk on just about everything.
2. Yeah 3800 is about right. On track days people often remove subs, rear upper seat backs, and spare tire. If you dont wanna lose any options/luxurys i dont know what to tell ya. A/c is deffinitly a luxury but what you do with your s4 is up to you. I haven't found any way to drop 200lbs without sacrificing any luxuries, ill kick a passenger out first. Honestly Iv probably added weight to my car.
Dosnt look comfortable to me!
6. Usually its the torque converter that goes that goes on these cars. From what iv heard level 10 gets mixed reviews, there are a couple people in here with stock transmission with stage 3.
11. yeah lock/unlock/panic but theres a button on the trunk to open it so you just have to unlock it and hit the button. I dont know about your maxima, the saabs in my family require you to open the door to pop the trunk. ANNOYING!
7+16. The Bentley Service manual is the only one i know of. Work on this car isnt as easy as other cars, but you can do it. Before you start anything just make sure you have the time and the right tools+ parts. TK is absolutly right ts pretty cramped for space, there are a fair amount of electronics, and alot of one time use parts like clamps. Be patient, it wont always be easy. If your considering working on your car buy a VAG-COM, software, and the Bently manual at www.ross-tech.com, it will help you immensely.

Thanks so much guys. Again, sorry if they were repeat questions.
The question I still didn't get a definitive answer on is how to identify an early '01 from a late '01 (2001.5). I ask because I am going to see an '01 tomorrow (only 35,000 miles!). TK mentioned as well as this thread that a newer badge would indicate the".5". I hope it's that easy.
Would you guys strongly discourage the purchase of an '00 or an early '01?
Are the engine upgrades/fixes easy enoughto do on an early '01 to make it equal to a late '01/'02?
Thanks again.
