Sorry, I had to do it - my newbie question thread...
Y2001.5, M-box ECU for manual, revised turbos, no f-hose, revised TBB, different oil inlet lines, possibly changed shifter stalk, polished aluminum mirrors w/ sport package, new badge, Avant model
Well, I went to drive the car today. It was my first time driving a 2000-2002 S4. It is a 2001, 35,000 miles, light blue (Nogaro blue?), sport package, premium package, cold weather package, 6 speed. I'm not typically a blue fan, especially the two tone seats but I was so stoked on the low mileage and the fact that it had the premium and cold weather package.
Something just wasn't right though. The body seemed really straight and I could detect no signs of an accident (I like to think I am good at that) but something told me it was in an accident. The airbag light was on and he gave me some lame story about how his son 'started to modify the car but then stopped'. Huh? The car had one clear corner light and one orange corner light. The airbag panels all seemed wavy and lifting off. When I asked if the car was in an accident, I got a pause and then a hesitant 'Not that I know of'. Also, while driving, a triangle with an explanation mark in the tachometer came on. What does that mean (he didn't have an owner's manual)?
So, I think I am going to let this particular one go. But, in general, I was very pleased with the S4. I like its styling, interior, layout, features, handling, ride, etc. Don't jump all over me but I do honestly have to say it didn't pull as hard as I had expected. Was that because maybe this one had been in an accident? Because there were 3 -200 lb guys in the car? Because it's not modified yet? ??
I never did figure out how to determine 100% if it was a 2001 or 2001.5 but it did have the newer badge and it did have the chrome mirrors (sport package). So does that mean it's a .5??
Overall, I'm still glad I went to see it. I learned a lot about the S4 and now know for sure I want one.

I would say it is most likely the 2001.5. Yeah stock it only putting like 200Hp to the wheels and 3800lbs of car + 600lbs in passengers could make it feel like less. Could also have been in limp mode, it dosnt sound like they guy your buying it from remotely knows what's going on. Also im assuming with you didnt get to really tach it out and see what its got considering the other 2 people in the car. Add a chip and exhaust and it is a completely different vehicle to drive. The miss-match headlights would make me question something, as would any kind of warning lights. While those low miles are sweet, as are the options, i think you may be doing the right thing by passing it up. I dont like the 2 tone seats either. If you are still thinking about it ask if you can have a mechanic look it over.
guarentee it had an accident.... check car fax..... umm the circle with! inside is the traction ESP light, just hit the button and that gets shut off. YEa it will feel slow with a bunch of people in the car. If u want take it to audi dealer and pay the $75 and have them go through it they will tell u whats up with it.
With regard to the year, the best way to find out the manufacture date is to call the dealer and give them the VIN number. They can find out the month, I believe Oct '01 marks the 2001.5 S4.
Also, I agree with TKneeds...run a carfax. It is well worth the $20.
