Default Timing Belt time

Hey all, 84k on my car now, its running fantastic, but it is time for a timing belt change. I bought the car 3k ago and I figured the previous owner likely didnt do it. I know where to get the kit from, does anyone know how many hours dealerships quote for the change? 10-12hrs? Also im gonna change the oil and dont have the owners manual [:@]. What do some of you typically run for oil? Im new to turbocharged cars I imagine the best oil to use is different then typical 5-15W30.

orio,

I think that labor hours for the timing belt change is arbitrary, depending on your skill level. If you are having Audi do it, i guess it will be about 8-9 hrs of labor. As far a oil goes, the best you can do is synthetic oil, mobil 1 etc, and i think the viscosity is 0-30w which is great for your car. huge diff from regular dino oil. anyway, good luck, and welcome to the board. I am new to turbo engines like you are. I used to work on a chevy 350 V-8!

Scroll through the posts. A guy just asked the same question you did.

A guy over on the AudiWorld forum was quoted $1100 parts and labor for timing belt, serpentine belt, and water pump.

Are you sure the prior owner didn't do any of that? Any way to find out?

I think it's SOP is to replace the water pump when doing the belts. Doesn't add much labor and the part isn't too expensive. Water pump will fail soon if it hasn't already, labor for doing just the pump, separate from the belts, would be way high.

Well i asked the dealership i bought it from and they had no idea. So im gonna go to an actual audi dealer and see if they can pull something up. Didnt say anything about it on carfax. I definitely would replace the water pump. ECS makes a kit that includes all the goodies for like $250.00, so Id bring that and just pay labor. Thanks!

if any one in my shop took 8/10 hrs he would be looking for a new job unless there was a very good reason for it
